My post on LinkedIn about my interview experience in 1996 @amazon blew up. But a bunch of people asked me why I left after 3 yrs and boomeranged 14 years later. So I thought I’d tell the story here #AWS #amazon #techjobs

Everyone assumes that if you’re “successful” by some measure they seen you got there through a series of brilliant chess moves or you were an overnight #success. Occasionally that’s true, but far more often it looks like this
My first 3 years at amazon were amazing. We changed the world of #ecommerce, survived competitive threats that were supposed to kill us, invented lots of 😎 #tech that’s now commonplace in websites. But it was also exhausting. I worked 6-7 days a week, every week for 3 years 😓

[BREAKING] We have confirmed from multiple sources that @AmazonStudios new billion-dollar #LOTR series will open its first season centered on a young Aragorn.

Let's discuss whats available and how this opens up Tolkien's Legendarium. A thread. #Tolkien

Firstly, we must stamp out any remaining confusion:

From the first press release, we know this so-called #LOTR series will NOT be a retelling of the events of the War of the Ring. #BeenThereDoneThat

Instead it will be Appendices based and cover a lot of time and history. /2
This is the greatest advantage the show runners have: that so much of Tolkien’s storytelling, even just in “Appendix A,” covers a tremendous swath of time.

Starting with a young Aragorn narrative allows connections to his Numenorean bloodline (and to the founding of #Gondor). /3

Interesting perspective. It is now over 30 years since I published my first referred paper “An investigation of the efficiencies of various buffer gases in Na-Xe spin exchange”, which has never been cited, even by me. adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/1987PhLA..…
It did perhaps contribute in a tiny way to making the world a better place as an incremental part of a larger project that ultimately led to useful medical imaging technology. Not that I appreciated that potential at the time; we were just trying to figure out how things worked.
Alkali and noble gas atoms can form weak van der Waals molecules in vapor. In terms of electron shell structure, the alkali is basically a noble with an unwanted electron. Temporary molecules form in which two elements like Sodium and Xenon share the electron like a hot potato.
