FOURTEEN DAYS of wasted Daily Mail front page headlines

Paul Dacre must be proud.

@LBC Please do take a moment to think of Dan Hodges on this most difficult of days

@LBC #bbcaq #Beergate

*Actually, it was almost two weeks' worth of Daily Mail front pages and a Mail on Sunday, but you get the point.

Oh, wow ... resignation after resignation - theguardian.com/politics/live/…

They are desperately trying to push him to resign which means ... Boris must have been plotting an early October general election, announcing just after recess which starts in 2 weeks -
Has the "Dissolution and Calling of Parliament" bill received royal assent now?

In which case, it's purely down to Boris to choose when the GE occurs (or technically, the PM to advise / request the Queen on when to dissolve parliament).
X : Why on earth would he call it?
Me : I'm guessing that Boris has a crystal ball and can tell what is going to happen with #beergate or is at least gambling on something happening over the recess ... this could get very vicious, very quickly as an onslaught starts.

1/ The truth is probably not as clear cut as the MSM media would suggest. Just one poll, and an outlier at that. But it suggests that it is entirely *possible* for #Johnson to win the next election. #Labour is not where it needs to be...
2/ By elections are strange beasts. It's important that oppositions win them to show that they are successfully eating in to the support of the Governing Party. But oppositions who win by-elections don't necessarily go on to win General elections...
3/ This is because they tend to be used as protests against the Government, as do local elections. MSM journos are picking & choosing their political precedents. It's true that the vote of confidence means that #Johnson is less likely to lead the Tories into the next election...

Exclusive: @Keir_Starmer's shadow ministers have let rip at @SadiqKhan's cannabis review.

Leaked WhatsApps:
📱"This is going to go down like a bucket of cold sick in my bit of the suburbs just now…"
📱 "Open goal for Priti..."

inews.co.uk/opinion/labour…
This piece has certainly prompted quite a reaction.
I'm told some of the MPs involved have quit the WhatsApp group in disgust that their messages were leaked to @theipaper.
The piece includes the polling on cannabis that is dividing Labour MPs.
Here's one from @YouGov:

Last year by 52% to 32% Britons said they'd support legalisation of the drug - a view held by almost all age groups, with only 65+ yr olds largely against

1/ With those who are what they appear to be, there's less to analyse & expose than there is of people who pretend to be something they're not. That #Johnson is a liar is part of his brand. Their sense of entitlement an explicit part of their ideology #partygate #beergate
2/ With regards to #Partygate/#Partygatefines is it really news that the dishonest, self-serving #Johnson Tory Government broke the rules they themselves and expected others to follow? #beergate
3/ More frightening, perhaps are those that package awful deeds in moral doublespeak - as if they are expressions of higher purpose. One example would be dressing up the disproportionate targeting of anti-war Jews as fighting "antisemitism"... #ItWasAScam #Partygate #beergate

An interesting piece in @prospect_uk by @GeorgePeretzQC
which prompts me to reflect on my own views on #partygate and #beergate… (short 🧵).
2/ In terms of the legal framework, this has been explored by a number of good lawyers and I won’t repeat that material here (since I suspect that this is rather more a political, than a legal commentary).
3/ On the question of #partygate, I think that the real issue for the PM is his early efforts to suggest that nothing had happened: that all the *guidance* (which was even stricter than the law) had been followed. Personally, I don’t think he should have to go for receiving a FPN

Here's why i think #Beergate signals that the Tories are planning a General Election this year, and is the key part of their strategy for winning it. 🧵

1.
IMO the Tories' ideal scenario = Starmer is cleared/not fined. If this happens they can shout "unfair!" and "hypocrite!" forever. And they will.

However, if Starmer IS found to have breached regs, he WILL resign, but Johnson still won't. This will look awful for the Tories.

2.
We'll bitch and moan on Twitter, but ultimately only Tory MPs can force him out.

Most of us will loathe the double standard, but the Boris/Tory stalwarts, for whom Johnson's endless trangressions are priced in, will swallow it.

And now Starmer's gone, and Johnson remains.

1/ Short 🧵 on #Beergate.

It's something of a cliché that many news organisations, asked if it's raining, will ask "experts" to come and give opposing opinions, when a proper journalist would open the window.
2/ Throughout #Beergate, many news organisations are piling in, speculating about the potential consequences for Labour/Starner. Generating enough hot air to ward off the energy problems for weeks.
3/ Yet, only on Twitter, have I seen people who understand what the rules were at the relevant points in time, and looked to see whether Starmer/Labour and Johnson/Conservatives were compliant with the rules applicable at the time.

🥘🍻some #beergate key points 1. Starmer didn't invite outside guests (say his interior designer...) just work colleagues
2. Note shows social distancing and mask encouraged and that relying on hotel for dinner would be cutting it fine!
3. In spring 2021 we weren't in lockdown
4. Expecting ppl who had to mix with each other all day for work purposes to go without dinner is a bizarre and severe interpretation of Covid rules, being annoyed at ppl having a cake break with outside guests is less so
5. Starmer isn't the PM who made, then broke rules
And also denied existence of any events
6. We should judge him on whether he ordered a korma or something less boring

There’s a lot about “lockdown spirit” (icky term but indulge it as a shorthand) that was very admirable, emerging from a sense of social solidarity that impelled us to make major personal sacrifices for the sake of the greater collective good. (1/4)
But the same period also gave rise to a lot of petty, embittered, curtain-twitching social spite that saw the whole experience as an opportunity to snitch on and do down other people: the exact opposite of appealing to a sense of social solidarity. (2/4)
In different ways, I think both dynamics are at play in the responses to #Partygate (which is rightly seen as an affront to the former) and #Beergate (which seems to me to have a lot to do with the latter). (3/4)

John Curtis on BBC: "Labour will be disappointed". #Election2022 "Labour isn't even on course to be the largest party at the next general election, let alone get a majority"
I thought I might have been a bit harsh on Starmer when I wrote this yesterday. Turns out a lot of voters agree with me. express.co.uk/comment/expres…
From polling expert @MSmithsonPB this morning: "Overall Johnson is very safe but I wonder whether Starmer is now the leader with the most to worry about". So it's not just John Curtice folks! #LocalElections2022

1/ I don’t have a huge amount of followers so any shares of this will be greatly appreciated. I have put together the information I can find regarding #beerswithkeir #BeerwithKeir #BeerStarmer #KarmaforStarmer #Partygate #beergate #durhampartygate
2/ We know that the line being taken by Starmer, Labour & supporters is that the event was investigated by police and no rule breaking was found to have taken place. But was it investigated? According to the police all they did was review the video. Not much of an investigation. Image
3/ We know that information regarding the event and who was there has changed since the so called investigation took place. For instance we know Starmers office denied that Rayner was there that evening. Image
