On this day 30 years ago I was twenty, and a student in East Berlin. I was at a party when we heard the news. Something I thought impossible all my life had happened - the wall was open. /1
We grabbed our beers and went to the checkpoint at the #Tränenpalast (palace of tears) where a big crowd was already waiting to be let through and on the S-Bahn train to West Berlin. And unbelievably, the border guards let us go! /2
When the train crossed the border between East and West the whole train cheered, and tears were shed... Once in West Berlin we made our way to the Brandenburg Gate, just following the huge crowds moving down the ‘Strasse des 17. Juni’… /3

30 years ago today the Berlin Wall fell. But in East Germany in the 1980s the authorities had a different concern: could Western computer games subvert the masses?

And the Stasi had it in for one computer above all: the Commodore 64! #BerlinWall30
If you wanted a home computer behind the Iron Curtain you had two choices: buy a locally produced clone of a Western one...
...or navigate your way around import controls and try to get a Western one. It was tricky, but It was possible.

1/8 The fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November, 1989, was one of the most significant events of the 20th century. But why was the Wall built in the first place❓ #BerlinWall30 #BerlinWall
@bbcworldservice 2/8 As political change and civil unrest gripped Eastern Europe 30 years ago, a euphoric crowd of Berliners started to tear down the Wall. What led to that moment? 🤔 #BerlinWall30 #BerlinWall
3/8 Shouts of “the Wall must go” began two years earlier. David Bowie was among the performers at a 1987 concert in West Berlin that led to riots #BerlinWall30 #BerlinWall bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/w3…

Nowadays, Germany can seem more disunited than ever before, but a day like this should still fill us with unalloyed joy.

I was lucky enough to be born into a united, democratic country. Many others were not. #BerlinWall30 Image
For my family, the separation was a daily reality – something that had torn us apart. Long enough there was little hope of there ever being change.

When the wall came down it was proof that peaceful protest and slow and patient efforts can change the world for the better.
There is still a lot of work – and it is hard work indeed – ahead of us until we can truly speak of a reunited country. The border and the regime that was the GDR might be gone, but the separation in many people’s minds lives on – even in my generation.

30 years today since the Berlin Wall came - here I am (a little younger) doing my small bit to knock it down...#BerlinWall30 #mauerfall30 #Mauerfall
I have never forgotten the moment I heard the news - I was at a conference of young Brits and (West) Germans at Wilton Park. The subject that afternoon was ‘Prospects for change in East Germany’...
We had just been told that with Gorbachev’s ‘glasnost’ and ‘perestroika’ it was just possible that within the next 10-15 years the Wall might be opened and even ‘conceivable’ that within our lifetimes Germany might be re-united...

I remember 10 years ago, around the 20th anniversary, I also gave a talk on the subject. It was almost exclusively backward-looking. I didn't relate it to anything happening in Britain at the time, because it didn't seem relevant.
This time is a bit different, because:

Seen from space, Berlin is still divided by street lighting. 30 years after the fall of the #BerlinWall, the former division between the East and West parts of the city is noticeable from the International @Space_Station. Can you spot the difference?

@Space_Station @astro_tim @ESA_de @esa @ESA_History @ISS_Research @cities4tnight @pmisson @ESA_EO The yellow lights correspond to East Berlin, where orange sodium lamps lit most of the streets today. The white glow comes from the brighter LED lamps in West Berlin. #BerlinWall30
