Lmaooo watching the Danielle Smith presser and she says that a “made in Alberta” carbon tax should have always been the goal.
Uhhh it was. @RachelNotley had it working quite well and then the UCP threw it away for the federal option. Hmm. Funny that.
I swore I wasn’t going to watch this tire fire but here are some more highlights:
- Kenney has yet to accept a meeting with Smith
- Smith is getting rid of Hinshaw, she’s currently still employed but will be replaced so we can treat Covid like the flu
Smith says she and Kenney had disagreements on two big policy issues that were what tripped him up as leader.

Covid and what else?

I am really troubled by the recommendation that symptomatic people move to rapid testing at home rather than government administered PCR. #abhealth #COVID19AB
It makes perfect sense to move to government administered rapid testing and only PCR test negatives. This would allow official recording of positive rapid tests and spare our lab system. #abhealth #COVID19AB
If there is no official COVID positive result, how will workers who acquire COVID at work be eligible for WCB? #abhealth #COVID19AB

For those who are following along...
I used to post these music requests after my surgery days since before the pandemic.
No such posts this month. Surgeries cancelled.
Behind every music request is a person who is having surgery. Some minor, some life changing...
#COVID19AB
I am only one Alberta surgeon.
To date 21 patients under my care had their surgery cancelled - some minor, some life changing.
More to come.
My heart breaks.
We are working hard to advocate for Albertans but we need your help.

I have cared for pregnant COVID patients so understand the need for "all hands on deck" to weather the storm that is wave 4.
We need to appreciate however that we are robbing Peter to pay Paul in order to accomplish this.
And remember, this was predicted and preventable.

Questions:
Q: Accountability? Resignations? Inquiry?
A: We are trying really hard. We will think about accountability later (he's hoping we will forget) /1
#ResignKenney
Q: Pattern of resisting intervening, mocking experts, and finally impose measures when there are no options. Why don't you learn? 🔥
A: Shockingly, he brags about our shitty response. Talks about the problems with restrictions. Claims they made "best efforts" to vaccinate /2
Q: Hinshaw, are you quitting because of your gaffe in declaring endemic?
A: Claims she is doing her best (looking at other provinces, evidence, etc). Public health restrictions were exacerbating other things. "Deeply committed" to the health of the province /3

Ok, so we’re already a little bit of a late start.

So if nothing else, at least they’re consistent on this?
Kenny on now, “We’re declaring a public health emergency, we knew it was gonna be bad, but it’s extra bad, like if only we could have seen it happen”

So, if we look at the rate of hospitalizations for double vaxxed folk (4.8 per 100,000) and apply it to number of people who are under-vaccinated, we can see how many ‘excess’ hospitalizations there are due to under-vaccination.

This is getting increasingly astounding.
If we remove the estimated number of people in hospital <12 (using the age hospitalization data over the last 120 days)…

There are 413 excess people in hospital in Alberta due to under-vaccination.

Which is more than the total number of beds in the entire Grey Nuns Hospital.
That includes 113 excess people in ICU alone.

Foothills hospital in Calgary is one of the largest hospitals in Western Canada. At baseline, they have a 26 bed unit.

So we’re talking multiple large ICUs filled with unvaccinated people in EXCESS of what’s expected w/ vaccination.

Plenty of people asking, "what can I do to put a halt to this COVID policy change." I understand the helplessness, but there are actually things you can do to make a difference. (Thread)
Protests have proven effective at generating solidarity and revealing to everyone that this matters to a lot of people. edmonton.citynews.ca/2021/07/30/alb…
This is particularly true if #OrdinaryAlbertans show up in large numbers. It demonstrates that the government's focus on appeasing a narrow base is out of touch with society. And it embarrasses premiers on the national stage. edmontonjournal.com/news/politics/…

What I learnt on the Twitter this week:

1. Doug Ford announces Ontario to move to Step 3 five days early. Says now that Karla, Kiki, Klondike, Keto, Ketchup and Kacophony "have had their hairs and nails done they're ready to eat at a restaurant!"
2. #CancelDougFord
3. Stephen Lecce unveils back-to-school plan. Says three-prong approach of Gratitude, Appreciation, and Ongoing Consultation will keep kids safe with an historic investment of forty-eleven billion dollars.
4. Ford gives millions to private LTCs. Includes commemorative iron ring.
5. Erin O'Toole says he's got Alberta's back. Which means he's not at all sure Alberta's got his now.
6. Pierre Poilievre says socialism and Nazism are the same. Also announces plastics are the future. Pundits unsure whether Poilievre's reelection platform based in 1933 or 1968.

Last night when I got back to EMS headquarters at the end of my shift there was a group of 40-60 people, mostly young adults assembled in a parking lot/loading area directly across from where we return our vehicles.

No distancing, no masks.

/1
I sat in my truck stunned.

And angry.

This wasn’t a protest.

This was a boatload of people having a party in a parking lot.

Music blaring, close dancing, the whole deal.

/2
A huge part of me wanted to drive over and scream at them.

I spent my night in PPE trying to help COVID patients, and these people were literally having a party without a care in the world, like it’s just the #BestSummerEver.

I took a few breaths...
