Watching the Wilmot council March 6/2023 meeting live at 7pm tonight discussing the Hallman Quarry Pit and the city of Wilmot pulling out of the OMB.
First speaker was solicitor Rodney Northey who spoke on behalf of lawyers for Citizens for Safe Ground Water Inc. He spoke of the 55 houses that will be impacted by the existing plans for the quarry pit and outlined the environmental damages and health concerns of this project. 
Northey stated the 2020 Provincial Policy Statement places focus on avoidance of risks but the decisions made were based on 41905 of the Environmental Protection Act which has absolutely no regard for fine particulate matter issues.
Ontario Tribunal was supposed to take place this week regarding the Hallman Quarry Pit, a proposal rejected by all of Wilmot council. Residents were blindsided by a last minute “settlement” and they held an emergency meeting for proposed gravel pit. kitchener.ctvnews.ca/wilmot-residen…
The meeting to stop the Hallman Pit was filled to capacity. @saveourwater & concerned citizens believe the municipality was impacted by #bill23 which would allow developers to claim costs if the Tribunal ruled in their favour.
Landowners "stockpile" gravel-extraction approvals. And, once an approval (i.e. aggregate-extraction permit under the Aggregate Resources Act) is given the landowner can sell the land as both farmland and as a gravel pit. It is a Ponzi scheme. reformgravelmining.ca/petition

In November 2022, the Ontario government announced it was changing Hamilton’s official plan to expand the city’s boundary by 2,200 hectares and encroach into farmland and wild spaces that are part of the Greenbelt. This goes against the direct wishes of the people of Hamilton. 2/

Earlier today, Municipal Affairs Minister Steve Clark confirmed that the PC government didn't consult with #FirstNations before passing their controversial housing #Bill23 23. Said consultations will happen now, that it's already become law. #onpoli
Clark also said municipalities will also "deal with our #Indigenous partners" as well.
The @ChiefsofOntario are not amused, arguing that #Bill23 is a "blatant violation" of Indigenous rights, and that the PCs do not have jurisdiction to make "unilateral administrative changes"

The province argues that cities are not sitting on reserves. This is false. Development charges are earmarked for capital projects - the infrastructure projects like bridges, transit, fire stations and community centres that make our city great. We only collect what we need.
It will take a 5-10% property tax increase and/or a reduction in capital projects or city services to make up that difference – BEFORE any other budget pressures are applied. This is not fair to you as a property tax payer and resident.
According to this @globeandmail article, a donor to the Ford government borrowed $100 million at a TWENTY-ONE PERCENT interest rate in order to buy up Greenbelt land that, in less than a year, was magically open to development. (1/x)

So the De Gasperis family decided to pay $21 million a year to borrow $100 million for a piece of Greenbelt land that wasn’t supposed to be developed? Why would anyone do that unless they had a crystal ball or some other way to know that they could develop the land in the future?

I would love to see a coalition of municipalities work together to put pressure on the Ontario government to incorporate sustainable building design into the Ontario Building Code, to replace municipal green standards that have been lost in the midst of a climate emergency.
Maybe this is advocacy that @AMOPolicy @ONBigCityMayors can explore? Without green standards, development can proceed that isn't built to withstand climate change conditions. Ultimately, this will leave municipalities & property owners on the hook for costs of disaster mitigation
I live in a huge riding. It’s an hour drive to my MPPs office in #SmithsFalls. But I’m doing it tomorrow morning. I’ll bring a sign and a message to stand up for wetlands, affordable housing & our conservation authorities because #Bill23 trashes them all.

And it’s been keeping me awake. Science-based protections would come off so many protected wetlands across the province including ones that I love. Endangered salamanders barely holding on on #MountNemo would be fair game for gravel mining.
Sprawl that nobody but wealthy developers want would ruin the best farmland in our country. Billions that developers pay to our municipalities would be waived and you and I would get stuck w the bil. Conservation Authorities that protect us from flooding? Gutted.

We have over inflated housing values, land banking & empty houses jacking up prices plus bitcoins & Jersey tax evasion where folks borrow to buy shorts in loans that can never be repaid. Hedge funds are massive & trust funds are monopolizing boards.
#Bill23 is a bad Bill that will make housing more unaffordable not less, destroy wetlands, takes away renters rights and exacerbates urban sprawl all while lining the pockets of developers.

Putting the blame squarely on cities for the lack of affordable housing is just plain wrong and a Conservative talking point to strip cities of their independence and download costs onto them just like Mike Harris did in the 90s-00s with transit services and amalgamation. 2/7
Are there bad NIMBY city councillors? Sure but the answer isn't to remove the few tools cities have to ensure sustainable development.
