🚨PAPER🚨

"Many scenario analyses suggest that #NegativeEmissionTechnologies, such as #bioenergy with carbon capture and storage & #afforestation, are required to achieve #NetZero target, but their large-scale deployment has a trade-off relationship with food security."

So, a new study considered an innovative #NET, "direct air carbon capture and storage (#DACCS), and analyzed its impact on global food access based on an indicator defined by food expenditure per GDP."
2/7
Study found that "the scenario considering DACCS mitigates the adverse impact on food access in regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa compared to the scenario not considering #DACCS by alleviating food expenditure increase & GDP loss associated with emission reduction efforts."

New briefing from Griffith University in #Australia argues that a major shift to using forest #biomass burning for energy comes with grave risks of highly perverse outcomes, including increased CO2 emissions and negative impacts on forest integrity. research-repository.griffith.edu.au/handle/10072/4…
A rethink of the role of forest #biomass burning for energy in national decarbonization policy is therefore urgently needed. Forest #biomass is not clean energy because burning it releases CO2 emissions and so does not contribute to a decarbonization pathway.
The emissions from burning forest #biomass are instantaneous, but their removals from the atmosphere are not and take a long time. This means there is a significant time lag between when carbon is emitted and when it is removed and stored.

The inconvenient truth about the #renewables boom in a world of growing energy consumption. Share of fossil fuels basically unchanged 2009-2019.
From @REN21's new 'Renewables 2021 Global Status Report'
ren21.net/reports/global…
The 11.2% #renewables share excludes so-called 'traditional biomass' (e.g., wood for cookstoves). Even then, share of #bioenergy among renewables still considerable
From @REN21's new 'Renewables 2021 Global Status Report'

You might have heard #renewables overtook fossil fuels in new infrastructure but this usually only refers to power sector & only to capacity not generation. Picture for whole energy system rather bleak

Just a reminder: The #bioenergy industry is claiming to burn "forestry residues". This is the photographic evidence from across Europe (& US).

Tata capital financial services, an arm of Tata sons bought 7.3% equity of Praj Industries from Founder-Chairman Pramod Chaudhari on September 2007 for around 338 crore rupees @ Rs. 252/share valuing the company at 4630cr. #praj #ethanol #bioenergy
Praj’s stock shortly topped out in December 2007 at Rs. 270/share. Then came the GFC where the stock bottoms at Rs. 50/share in March 2009. For over 11 years Praj has been in a tight range between Rs. 50 & 155/share.
Fundamentals and order book ramp up never followed through. Top line has been flattish for 11 years around 900-1000 crores and an average EBITDA of around 80 crores. Tata capital financial services held the stock for over 13 years with no returns.

(2/9) Scenarios achieving 50-56% CO2 reduction by 2030 see total #coal use reduce by 70%, #oil by 25-50% and #naturalgas by up to 25%. The use of total #biomass ranges from limited growth to an increase of up to 60%. All compared to 2017.
(3/9) The growth of #wind power generation varies between a factor of 1.5 and 3.5 and the growth of #solar power between 1.5 and 4.5. Between 2017 and 2030.
#Hydrogen and #CCUS emerges in some but not all scenarios.

*New thread* Today we've published two new reports on UK #land use & #biomass setting out why they're important in tackling climate change & how our land can help to build resilience to climate impacts. Here's a summary of both: theccc.org.uk/wp-content/upl… and theccc.org.uk/wp-content/upl…
Kicking off with land use: Our report says fundamental reform to how land is used and managed is needed to deliver the UK’s climate goals. There is now a unique opportunity to define a better land strategy that can tackle the challenges of #climatechange. Read the Exec Summary.
Significant changes in land use could help reduce emissions by 35-80% by 2050. Figure 2.5 explains. Deeper cuts in emissions by 2050 require ↑↑ tree planting & peatland restoration, while the harvesting of biomass could help to displace emissions in energy & construction.

The UK could be #CarbonNeutral by 2050, meeting its #ParisAgreement targets, according to a new report from The Royal Society and @RAEngNews. Here are 8 technologies and approaches that could be vital (a thread) royalsociety.org/greenhouse-gas…
Forestation – whether it’s replacing lost trees or creating new forests, this technique means more trees. Better management could remove as much as 12 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
Habitat restoration – 80% of the UK’s wetlands, peatlands & coastal habitats are considered to be in poor condition. Restoring these could prevent previously trapped carbon from escaping, & store up to 18 tonnes of carbon dioxide per hectare per year royalsociety.org/topics-policy/…

With legislation committing California to 100% carbon-free electricity sitting on Gov. Brown’s desk, I wanted to share a timely new peer-reviewed article out today in the journal, @Joule_CP: cell.com/joule/fulltext…
In the paper, @nsepulvedam, @FdeSisternes, Prof. Richard Lester and I use detailed power system modeling to identify strategies that lower the costs and increase the odds of reaching a zero-carbon electricity grid. Check out MIT News coverage of the paper: technologyreview.com/s/611987/how-c…
After ~1,000 cases covering possible future tech cost, regional diffs in renewables quality & demand, and different limits on CO2, our study consistently demonstrates the best way to zero out electricity emissions is to deploy a balanced mix of low-carbon electricity sources.

A thread on #PhDinCanada application process. This is targeted to those still in Nigeria or outside Canada to a large extent. If you are in Canada, I will follow a different approach.
Here we go....
@OgbeniDipo @BTDTHub
First, PhD requirements.
While the requirement will vary between universities & field of program, but you generally need the following:
1. A master’s degree in a related field, with strong grades and proven research ability and potential. [This is key from my experience]
2. English Language Proficiency scores such as IELTS, TOEFL, etc. (if applicable).

Most universities in Canada recognize English as the official language of instruction in Nigerian universities but some have specific universities listed. So you may need to check this.
