The #HS2GravyTrain is all set to be a massive failure because we're in a #ClimateAndEcologicalEmergency, so Britain will have to move, this coming decade, to a #Degrowth economy, a #4DayWeek, lots more #WorkingFromHome, much less #LongDistanceCommuting

For any chance of human survival through a #ClimateAndEcologicalEmergency that will soon bring crop failures, hunger, chaos, all airport expansion must be halted and air travel massively cut back.

Here's a housing🧵to chew on over weekend. Mid-June update from 100+home builders across country. 1) rumblings of price ceiling. 2) slightly shrinking pool of qualified buyers. 3) some home releases not selling out immediately. 4) normal summer slowing as vacations take priority.
#Austin builder: “Some interest lists are shrinking & others are not. Seeing buyers who are no longer able or willing to afford the monthly payment. Definitely seeing attrition here. Frustration that prices continued going up without an opportunity to purchase.”
#Dallas builder: “Interest lists are definitely shrinking because of pricing. Some drop off is happening due to price. But the re-sale market is still so tight it hasn’t dropped substantially. Extremely concerned about pricing going forward.”

New home sales fell in May, Y/Y & M/M. Theme of the month was sales decline by builder design. Few comments on demand slowing or skittish buyers, even w/new home prices +18% Y/Y nationally (survey record). Builder commentary from across the country per our survey to follow...
#Nashville builder: “Gapped out. Sales resume in June as new communities & phases start to open. By moving ability to contract on inventory homes later to finished drywall stage (window installation stage previously), expect sales to show continued decline. Decline by design.”
#Charlotte builder: “Paused sales from mid-May to mid-June in all communities & will selectively release homes for sale in the last 2 weeks of June & coming months. Sales look lower vs. last month but was capped due to limited lot availability & no inventory.”

Looking forward to an interesting discussion on the future of #Devolution and the UK's Governance Structures, in light of the @ISCProd_Matters final report #CFCDevolution
Chair @AndrewCities explains that the report explores how #Devolution has affected UK Governance Structures, and what lessons can be learned for further devolution, particularly in light of the #LevellingUp agenda #CFCDevolution
First speaker, former ISC Chair Andy Haldane notes that, while the ISC formerly has ceased to exist, the ethos & goals of the National Industrial Strategy continue to live on in the #PlanForGrowth and the #LevellingUp agenda #CFCDevolution

Here's May mid-month home builder channel check I hinted at earlier. Builders are pushing prices w/little pushback, though some starting. Some builders are using price escalators & highest/best offer. Many limiting pre-sales, shifting to spec, & pricing home later in build cycle.
#Dallas builder: “Not selling build jobs in May, starting specs only, and not selling until drywall. Costs are too out of control for us to take the inflation risk on build jobs. So sales are way down.”
#SanAntonio builder: “Only selling specs at Sheetrock stage. Last month, it was frame stage.”

Power & Publishing, a THREAD 1/n: Warm thanks to those who have helped share this essay. Its appearance marks the end of a 4.5 month struggle, which I share here, though perhaps risky—but we’re at a point where this is what needs to be said (conscious of lareviewofbooks.org/article/fascis…
writing this after a mass shooting of Asian women in the US & as British journalists & editors protest the Society of Editors’ denial of racism in British media).

I wrote the essay early Nov. & pitched it to UK outlets. After almost 2 months, a prominent Leftist magazine 2/n
said they’d be happy to print it, but a month later, on the literal eve of publication, reneged, citing a “delay” ordered by the editor-in-chief. I said, no problem, did they think weeks or months? *They never wrote back.*

Meanwhile, the handful of white male experts in 3/n

David Hencke investigates why Boris #Johnson’s Government handed out £1.7 million for #election management services without a competitive tender.
A large software company whose shareholders include #Brexiter and former #Conservative Cabinet minister Peter #Lilley
has been given a lucrative contract by the Cabinet Office without competitive tendering to revamp the management of the electoral register in extraordinary circumstances.
Though local government is in charge of the electoral register, the Government has responsibility
to contract an annual national canvas of people entitled to vote. #Idox Software Ltd, part of the worldwide Idox Group, won the £1.7 million contract for its revamp just in advance of purdah imposed by the 2019 General Election –

Less than a fifth of workers are back in offices 🚉💼🏙️

@ValentineQuinio analysed the latest worker footfall data 👣 added to our #HighStreets Recovery Tracker last week.

Here are the key takeaways 👇
centreforcities.org/blog/high-stre…
Averaged across all 63 largest city and town centres in the UK, by the end of September worker footfall was at 1⃣9⃣% of pre-lockdown levels, which only represents a 2⃣-percentage point increase compared to a month ago.

But this hides significant geographic differences across the country, with large cities like #London, #Manchester and #Birmingham once again lagging behind smaller places like #Basildon or #Mansfield.

I have been looking at the MSOA data for cases to 6 September 2020 at arcgis.com/apps/webappvie… . There are some places with very high case numbers.
#Sunderland - Houghton West (Houghton-le-Spring) has 45 cases in the week to 6 September. Which is an incidence of *560* cases per 100,000 (assuming a MSOA population of 8000) Image
#Bradford - Shearbridge and University has 37 cases in the week to 6 September. Which is an incidence of *460* cases per 100,000 (assuming a MSOA population of 8,000) @UniofBradford Image

Providing asylum seekers with #COVID19 essentials like masks & sanitiser should be the most basic requirement for accomm providers.

But in #Birmingham, they have to rely on groups such as @KHAction to stay safe.

This poses a health risk to both asylum seekers & the public. 1/3
This issue is not unique to Birmingham, as revealed by a recent @CommonsHomeAffs inquiry:

"We are appalled at reports that service users have not been universally provided either with laundry facilities, a generous supply of cleaning products, soap and sanitiser... 2/3
...or with financial support to enable them to access these essentials. It is difficult to conceive of any provision which is more fundamental to public health during the pandemic." Read more: publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm5801/cmse…

The #UKGovernment Torture Report

In 2005, I set up a business selling CDs, namely mixtape CDs after graduating from Uni.

In 2006, my home was raided & my business was stopped. They said the CDs I was selling were in breach of copyright.
It was a complete shock as the exact same CDs I was selling were prevalent on most high streets and supermarkets. They were selling in their thousands in places such as #Tesco & #HMV. And #Woolworths were the actual UK Distributor of these CDs.

There is a huge amount of false and misleading information about #HS2 on social media. Below is a myth buster thread which corrects some of the most repeated misconceptions about the project…
Myth 1: ‘HS2 only saves 20 minutes to #Birmingham’. FACT: #HS2 services will call at 25 stations in England and Scotland connecting 30 million people. It also frees up space on the existing network for more frequent stopping local services benefiting those who may never use HS2.
HS2’s budget is spread over 30 years and evens out at less than the annual roads budget. We will support 30,000 jobs at least 2,000 of which will be apprenticeships. The arrival of #HS2 is spearheading economic growth and is expected to create nearly 500,000 jobs around stations.

HS2’s already created over 60 new #wildlife habitats. Grassland, ponds, and plantings now support reptiles, badgers, birds, and bats. At Finham Brook in #Warks six new ponds benefit great crested newts amid 6,200 new trees. #WorldEnvironmentDay

HS2’s also planting 7 million #trees and shrubs between #London and #Birmingham alone. Over 40 species are being grown by Crowders Nurseries, a family run #SME in #Lincs. We’ve already planted 350,000 of them. #WorldEnvironmentDay

Thread: #GeorgeFloyd murals in the US & around the world (Barron's)
“This wall is part of a large mural that’s on the other side that has a picture of Martin Luther King facing Malcom X, trying to show the struggle, the social struggle & racial struggle that’s been happening for so long"-- artist Octavio Logo (KNWA Fayettville).
Syrian artists Aziz Asmar & Anis Hamdoun painted their #GeorgeFloyd mural “to call for peace and love.” Asmar said Floyd’s death “by suffocation” reminded him of Syrian civilians “killed by suffocation after the Syrian regime hit them with chemical weapons" (Fox5DC).

“HS2 is just 20 minutes quicker to #Birmingham” is a well-trodden myth. #HS2 will transform the UK with the 3Cs: More CAPACITY across the country’s #rail network. A low CARBON #transport network. Better CONNECTIVITY in the #Midlands and #North. Image
Capacity: #HS2 will add vital capacity to our overcrowded #rail network by placing long distance services on their own pair of tracks. This will create thousands of extra seats and space for more local, commuter and #freight services on the existing #railway. Image
Carbon: #Rail is the low carbon option for long distance travel, with #HS2 taking cars and lorries off the road. HS2 emits 17 times less carbon than the equivalent domestic flight and 7 times less carbon than the equivalent car journey.

In 2015 #Birmingham created a city minimum wage of $10.10 an hour after the state refused to create a minimum wage higher than the federal $7.25 an hour wage. Days later, the state passed a new law voiding any attempt by cities in #Alabama to raise the #minimumwage.
We submitted an amicus brief supporting a lawsuit filed on behalf of two Black worker making less than $10.10 an hour in Birmingham. Today an appellate court panel ruled to dismiss the case.
“We are disappointed that the appellate court chose to dismiss this case on a technical issue. This involved a decision made by a majority black city being overruled by the majority white legislature.” – SPLC’s Samuel Brooke
