Starting #BlackHistoryMonth with this reflection on #LangstonHughes. Happy Birthday Langston!

“As we commemorate his birthday, I hope we embrace his anger and frustration and remember not only his dreams but also his demands.”

I woke up feeling weirdly emotional about the football. For those of you not following England are in the final of #EURO2020 . Which is massive. And as a Black Londoner it feels... complicated. I want to try and explain why.
There are many of us who grew up in England but were never allowed to feel English. Who see the St George's cross and remember the people who fly it who say we don't belong here. That we should "go home"
Years ago when campaigning for @hopenothate with @krsegal & @RukayahSarumi we were ambushed by the EDL at a train station. A crowd of very angry people who hurled abuse at us and anyone black they saw. They wore the St George's cross on their clothes. Carried it in their hands.

As an African immigrant, I want to use this special day of Juneteenth to say a heartfelt "thank you" to my African American brothers and sisters, who paved the way for me in the United States of America.
I believe that your sacrifices & triumphs have helped open the door to immigrants of all stripes.Thank you!

Before you were Americans, you were Africans. We are of the same blood. Neither time nor history, nor experiences can change that. We're family, and family lives forever!
Your strength, courage, and indefatigable tenacity has earned you an indelible place in the annals of history as a tough, indestructible, and heroic people.

And so, today, especially, I offer you a hearty oblation of gratitude and support. I love you, family.

The pops of #BlackJoy I see in demonstrations built out of pain is everything.

When I worked on a ranch, we did what we called “brush clearing” - removing thorns & stumps to clear space for life to flourish. As allies, that’s our work.

Systemic racism (sexism, ableism, etc.) restricts spaces for people to be joyous, to be themselves. Instead, a person must devote time and energy to interacting with the barriers which attempt to confine them.

Let’s create more room for joy; more room for people to just be.
And when you’re white and have white privilege, or have privilege from another aspect of your life, that becomes a powerful tool to use.

“Wait...I have a brand new tractor I can use to clear the obstacles from this land? Great! Let’s put it to use.”

If I have one measure of my autistic advocacy, it’s Knox. He’s seven. Every time I see him I think “I’ve got 11 years.”

Eleven years until he turns 18. What world will he enter then? That’s my focus. It keeps me motivated; pushes me to hustle hard everyday.

Also, this video!
❤️
Video Description: A video showing a young black boy coloring a fist with a brown crayon. Subsequent images show him smiling and holding up his coloring. An additional photo shows three young white children coloring similar drawings.
I’ve been fortunate to have been able to spend time with lots of autistic kids and their parents. I see myself reflected in each and I work for all of them.

It’s just that something clicked when I hung out with Knox and his parents. I can’t explain it, but it said “hurry up”.

Story of black joy, brought to you by @lizzo: Today driving to work on my predominantly white university campus I had my windows down & Lizzo’s “Good As Hell” blasting. I was stopped behind a bus loading passengers & saw a black woman grooving to my music.
We caught eyes, smiling, during the “I do my hair toss, check my nails” chorus so I pointed at her and sang “Baby how you doin?” Without missing a beat she smiled & sang back “Doin good as hell!”
I nearly burst into black joy tears at this random, perfect little moment as the bus moved & I drove off. Thank you @lizzo for creating some unexpected #BlackGirlMagic in my life today.
