After I graduated from university I went to work with American Prairie Reserve in Montana and learn more about being a land management NGO!! If you ever get the chance to go there I highly recommend it @AmericanPrairie if you want to learn more go follow @DanielKinka
Whilst on the prairie I did all sorts of things! Conversed with guests, led tours, prepared the lodge for guests, did logistical things like taking guests to different accommodations across the reserve and delivering supplies where they were needed
I also got to help USFWS on their Black Footed Ferret/Prairie dog study in the Charles M Russell Wildlife Management Refuge! It was a dream to get to work to help protect ferrets! #blackmammalogists

So for my placement year I moved to Nelson, BC and was an intern for the ministry of forests, lands and natural resource operations!! I worked for a grizzly bear biologist and the species at risk biologist in our office. This was the most important thing I have ever done!
Did I move to Nelson because I wanted to snowboard in addition to studying bears? Yes! Did it work out? Yes! So I was stoked. Within a month of my arrival I was designing and carrying out a project with a threatened amphibian population in SE BC!!
Amphibians?! What is a #BlackMammalogist doing working with frogs? Well...I still couldn't tell you but they were part of the workload of the species at risk biologist so there I was, working with frogs and doing nighttime surveys in a wetland!

For many of us, the highlight of our research careers is field work. For me research in the field was the thing that made me want to become a #BlackMammalogist. It usually goes well, it sometimes doesn't. What is your greatest #FieldworkFail? @BlkMammalogists
I have had several #Fieldworkfails. There was the tough lesson learned about why I should be anchoring expensive taxidermy mounts to the ground.
There was also that time I got a #leech in my eye @CentreValBio. That black line along the top of my eyelid...that's it. Had to hike 45 min back to camp to get it pulled out. At some stage it got kinda hard to see... #FieldworkFail , #LeechOnMyEyeball Image
