In the essence of Dr. King, I'm going to keep it extra real with Twitter this evening. This is particularly aimed at the medical training programs in the Midwest and South. The performative mission statements really have to end. We're sick of it.

Soooooo many programs have these amazing mission statements of supporting diversity, fostering a community of diverse backgrounds, etc...then you look deeper and they've graduated one resident of color in the past decade. They have a homogeneous faculty but their patients aren't.
Another thing that needs to end is the courtesy interview. If you're not actually interested in ranking candidates of color, then don't invite them for an interview (or ask them to rotate at your hospital). It's a trend in medicine and applicants are aware; it's quite insulting.

Today, I participated in a med school's day on mental illness. I found myself indescribably moved hearing another panelist's story abt her sister who died by suicide. "Some people ask me if I am angry at my sister...How could I ever be? I'm sad that she suffered so much" A THREAD
Suicide is highly personal and very sensitive. The darkest moment in my life was the day I decided to kill myself 5 years ago. That day, I entered a horrible spiral of hating myself becuz I was going to hurt everyone I loved. Hating myself only made me want to kill myself more.
I made it through that suicide attempt but I hated myself for being willing to hurt everyone I loved. Coming back from that suicide attempt was the hardest thing that I'd ever done in my life. My depression was actually worse after surviving: my body was alive, my soul was not.
So about COVID & Health Disparities?

When the dust settles down and you have time to look back at the events that unfolded since the murder of #GeorgeFloyd, I want you to look at a few things.

I want you to look at the system and where it has failed George. I want you to look at the police and how they’re trained to use deadly force without oversight. The local and regional politics that influence it.
The legal system that could have been the check/balance holding the police accountable for their brutality. The coroner or medical examiner whose autopsy results could’ve been delivered without speculation and victim-blaming.
Alright #MedTwitter for my followers who are allies to that black community, I must inform you that the #CentralParkKaren incident occurs for most black men in every aspect of their life. This includes medicine, except instead of the police it’s “administration”. 1/x
Every time I’m asked to give feedback I have to choose my words very carefully. Because the minute I say something the other person doesn’t like, there’s a very likely chance the situation will escalate and result in me being reported. 2/x
Even if I am absolutely correct. Even if I was explicitly asked for feedback. Even if I’ve had a smile on my face the entire conversation. Even if I have endorsed my willingness to discuss the topic further. 2/x

1). “Freedom is a road seldom traveled by the multitude”— Renaldo Williams started his #chieftalk this morning @VUMCSurgRes with this Frederick Douglass quote— and took us down several personal roads in an incredibly thoughtful and moving #grandrounds. Thread follows....
2). It was about roads— the many different types of roads that get us from one place to another— some unmarked, some treacherous, some worn, some patched. And he reflected on his road— from Holmes County #Mississippi where 45% live in poverty.
3). To successfully navigate any road, you need a map and a compass (value systems), rest stops (opportunities that open doors), and guides (mentors).
In today's @ASALifeline MMO, learned about Dr Herman Barnett's accomplishments & strife. Thanks @marydahlen: "It’s clear that more needs to be done for equality, both in society overall and in medicine and anesthesiology specifically." #BlackMeninMedicine #BlackHistoryMonth

Dr. Barnett was a fighter pilot in WW2, followed by 1st African-American medical student in Texas, at UTMB...although not without controversy, prejudice, & discrimination. Graduated cum laude, pursued surgery residency, then anesthesiology residency.

A great leader & physician, he was appointed to Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, & elected president of Houston Independent School District (1st African-American in both positions). Sadly, his potential & life were cut short by a tragic plan accident at 47 y.
