We’re starting the Special Session with a rally to protect the freedom to vote. Thanks Black Votes Matter for organizing! #LetTexansVote #BlackVotesMatter
Have to shout out @RepToniRoseTX’s comment on the “critical race theory” bill to gag teacher’s from teaching about racism and current events.

“If black kids have to experience racism, then white kids can learn about it.”
Multiple issues on the Governor’s call disproportionately effect black Texans:

😡 Making it harder to vote

😡 Keeping poor Texans locked up before they’re convicted of a crime

😡 Gagging educators from teaching about race and current events

At 12:28 am the morning after Georgia’s Senate runoff elections, LeBron James tweeted, ‘Think I’m gone put together an ownership group for the The Dream. Whose in? #BlackVotesMatter.’
The WNBA’s Atlanta Dream is currently co-owned by Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-GA), who just lost her seat to Democrat Rev. Raphael Warnock.
Dream players publicly campaigned against Loeffler after she criticized the WNBA’s support of Black Lives Matter amid protests following George Floyd’s death.

Congrats Senator - Elect from the State of Georgia, the first African American to do so, @RaphaelWarnock .

Senator-Elect Warnock was initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha Inc., the oldest historically Black fraternity in the country, in Harlem, New York in 1993. Image
“In a word, it means ‘service’ for me,” Warnock explained in a video on Twitter late last year. “It’s also a great fellowship. It’s a wonderful way of connecting to other men with similar values. And while I am a proud Alpha man…there’s a lot of love between all these
fraternities and sororities.

Once @JonOssoff ‘s victory is certified the Dems will hold a simple majority in a 50/50 Senate with a tie breaker vote from Vice President - Elect @KamalaHarris . @senatemajldr will be fired as Majority Leader, and the Dems will now be

These pitches by Mayor Strickland and some city council members suggesting that they are concerned about "voter suppression" or people being "stripped of their right to vote" simply can't be seen as sincere. They're actually laughable if you think about it...+
How many times in 2019, 2018, 2017 or 2016 did they host voter registration or voter education events? Where is their record of advocacy for voters rights? Do they support automated registration? What about restoration of rights for those with felony convictions?...+
How have they engaged in (or dismissed) efforts to get more people involved in the political process? Where are their receipts?

Without them, these statements ring out as hollow talking points. And my hunch is that they feel confident they can mislead...+

1/ A conservative friend of mine argued at various times and in different contexts (including racial preferences or affirmative action), that slavery ended in 1865, he had nothing to do with it, so why don't African-Americans "just get over it." #RaceMatters
2/ Yes, slavery ended in 1865 and while it contributed greatly to the wealth of white America, African-Americans were given nothing in return as the government reneged on its promise of 40 acres and a mule after the end of the Civil War. #RaceMatters pbs.org/wnet/african-a…
3/ Compare this to the Homestead Act of 1866 which transferred an area of land in the west the size of CA and TX (10% of all US land) to whites who need only improve it for 5 years and file a deed. aeon.co/ideas/land-and… #RaceMatters

#LongVentingPostSoICanGetBackToThisWork:

We've spent years putting issues of poverty, violence, health and economic disparities front and center.

Folks call(ed) us rabblerousers, Facebook warriors, bullies, opportunists, race baiters and much worse (yea, we know)...+
...We sounded the alarms of needed equity, smoke-and-mirrors, mythical momentum, cheap religiosity, gentrifying "development" and more.

We've birthed orgs, protested, created programs, helped shape policies for criminal (in)justice reform, media accountability, living wages...+
..., access to healthcare, equitable education, fair contracting to aid black businesses...you name it.

Meanwhile, folks did more to interrogate and demonize our efforts than they did to hold elected and appointed officials accountable for their actions and investments... +

#SouthCarolinaPrimary results breakdown!

Here are my main take aways:

1. #BidenIsBack
2. #BlackVotesMatter
3. Looking towards #SuperTuesday

Lets get into it!

🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Context first, as I described yesterday, the majority of voters in SC are black 1/15
in this case 56% of voters, which is down from 2016 (61%). What wasnt down was turnout, over 527k people came out to vote, just shy of the 2008 record.

1. Biden is back

Huge night for Biden. With his back against the wall, Biden pulls of an enormous victory, winning with 2/15
a margin of nearly 30% over Sanders! Just like Nevada was about as good as it could be for Sanders, SC was close to the perfect outcome for Biden.

He won 61% of black voters, beating Sanders by a 44% margin. He won every age group except for 17-29 year olds, and won 3/ 15

Seriously, when has there ever *not* been an effort underway to suppress the minority vote in America? 🤷🏾‍♀️
I’m annoyed at the way she asked the question as if doubt is reasonable when it comes to race based voter suppression in this country or the SCOTUS didn’t just dismantle the VRA in 2013. Wake the fuck up already, White supremacy takes no breaks.
What part of Obama’s election in 2008 and re-election in 2012 scared the shit out of the White power structure to the extent that they brought back Jim Crow with a vengeance to eliminate their predominantly Black competition from the voting rolls are folk still not understanding?
