#DNRTulane is rocking my timeline.

Real talk, as a residency APD, I debated whether I should comment. I don’t have these problems in my current role, so maybe I should stay quiet.

But I read the entire court doc and cried. Cuz as a Black woman in academia, I am Dr. Dennar.
This could easily be me, at any point in my career, and I would want someone to speak up for me. If we’re being honest, there’s things I’m not ready to talk about in my career that already HAVE happened before I came to Nebraska, and I had no one to speak up for me.
So yea, I’m speaking up and saying that what we are seeing with #DNRTulane is structural racism in action. What we are seeing is silencing of #BlackWomeninMedicine and #HBCU discrimination. Do not look away. This is happening. All. The. Time. Everywhere.

A Grady elder once told me that we should all learn (and savor) ALL 3 verses of the Negro National Anthem. In honor of her-- and this historic moment--these @EmoryMedicine #BlackWomeninMedicine have done just that.

The first but not the last. . . .

. . . and at @EmoryMedicine, not the only either.

We are Assistant, Associate, and FULL Professors.
We are deans, vice chairs, chiefs, educators, investigators, and more.

And this?

This is for colored girls who considered quitting when the expectation wasn't enuf. . .

Sis. . . .you've got this. Yes, you.

We see you.
We're with you.
We celebrate you.

The first but not the last. Oh, happy day! 🌄✊🏾

While participating in a zoom call with colleagues meant to highlight ways to prioritize physician wellness in the time of COVID, I added to the chat: “What I find most difficult is mitigating the impact of COVID and racism simultaneously.” 🧵1/8
The attendants were mainly White, the session was led by a White Man - all individuals I had the pleasure of working with over several years - and the comment went unnoticed. 2/
Everyone contd to type and speak up about waking up at 6AM for that morning run and prioritizing physical activity, yoga and healthy cooking as if the comment wasn’t there. 3/

Does it have to take a national movement against racism for the discrimination BIPOC women face in medicine to be taken seriously?
Does it have to take a national movement for “all these disparities women face in the workplace are worse for intersectional women” to move from a one-liner in #DEI work to the forefront and for #SystemicRacism to be relevant in the women in medicine movement?
When Black women spoke up about the discrimination we face and asked for allies to hold systems and institutions accountable, why is our go to answer “academia takes time?”

(This is Leora for the last time today) To get us started on @ShareTheMicNowMed day for #BlackWomenInMedicine, let me introduce @betterasyouage. She is a urogynecologist in the US Air Force, now focusing on helping minorities and women of color to thrive in medicine. /1
Dr. Yashika Dooley has hosted an annual Physician Women of Color in Medicine Thrive Together Conference, and she is also a life and weight coach for women over 40 like, sigh, myself. And, she is a Twitter newbie! Please welcome her as she takes over my account for the day. /end

I recently went through a major change, new job and relocating to a new state with little ones in tow. Like many times before, I was called crazy for making these decisions.

I wanted to share a few things about this experience...
The idea that we’re at the mercy of large entities and that we, as individual physicians, are incapable of bringing about change is false. With the right people, leadership, and with the right goals, we are more than capable of advocating for our patients and improving care.
While we stress the importance of continuous system improvement, what we often neglect to talk about is futility as it relates to changing cultures. When you give your all and your efforts are not only not reciprocated but negated, you might have arrived at the point of futility.

Now that statements have been made and we got #whitecoatsforblacklives trending, what’s next?

What actions are we taking to deal with #PoliceBrutalityPandemic?

How are we going to deal with #racism in medicine?

Do they involve accountability?

Will there be transparency? Image
How do we hold these institutions accountable?

We tried diversity and inclusion, and IB training.

Not much change.

How do we hold our institutions accountable to go beyond statements and symbolism?

Will there be ability to report racism/sexism or any other misconduct, from colleagues/superiors/patients WITH protection from retaliation?

Women in Anesthesiology Statement on Racism in America

Women in Anesthesiology is an independent anesthesiology organization consisting of women of every color. Injustice felt by one of us is felt by all of us.
We recognize that our specialty of anesthesiology is not immune to the inequalities experienced by the black community. We recognize that pregnant black women are less likely to receive a labor epidural or to receive the preferred anesthetic for cesarean delivery.
We recognize that black children are less likely to have a parent present at induction of anesthesia or to receive antianxiety medications before surgery. We recognize that black children and adults sometimes receive inferior pain management.

To our young leaders yearning and fighting for justice,

When the dust settles down and you have time to look back at the events that unfolded since the murder of #GeorgeFloyd, I want you to look at a few things.
I want you to look at the system and where it has failed George. I want you to look at the police and how they’re trained to use deadly force without oversight. The local and regional politics that influence it.
The legal system that could have been the check/balance holding the police accountable for their brutality. The coroner or medical examiner whose autopsy results could’ve been delivered without speculation and victim-blaming.

Thread :

I am on a search committee for leadership position at our academic hospital. Final meeting today. I am the only non-white person in the room.

I felt fear.

It’s strange to call it what it is. I had rehearsed many times what I would say about diversity and equity. 1/
I even lay awake in bed today from 5-6 AM planning out just the right words so people could hear me, understand the important, not get offended.

During meeting, I had to do silent pep talk. “If I don’t say it, who will?”

Waiting for the “right time” to interject. 2/
I said my piece. It came out (almost) as smoothly as planned.

I am still worried what people will say about my comments as they walk from the meeting.

This is what your minoritized colleagues are feeling when they discuss the taboo subjects of race and racism in medicine. 3/

I was hesitant to post this story, but I feel as though there is a young female resident out there who needs to see this today. #WomenInMedicine #BlackWomeninMedicine 1/
I'm a chief surgery resident, meaning I lead teams of interns, residents, and students. But even after years at my institution, people sometimes have a hard time seeing me as a doctor. 2/
While my white male colleagues can wear scrubs and patients and staff will call them doctor even if they're a student, I always wear my white coat. I even personally purchased one with thick fabric and fancy buttons with my institution's logo to look as legit as possible. 3/
