I will try to find the words that strike the right balance between hope & frustration.

Hope : How amazing that all my colleagues are waking up to the fact that racism and racism in medicine is real.

Frustration : This feels like a nightmare.

No exaggeration, I have had > 10 separate offers in the past two weeks to “give my perspective” on racism in the medical setting. Peer groups, division meeting, departmental, school of medicine, state level, national level..it goes on. Private entities and public entities alike.
For the past six years as academic faculty , I have promoted DEI as a side job in academic medicine because it was seen as just that.. an afterthought or side thought to whatever primary issue was at hand. How much I would have loved to be invited and given a platform - THEN.

While I was there I was explicitly denied surgical cases on the basis of “previous experience” as if surgical skills don’t need to be reinforced over time so I could do scout work on the floors. @BIDMCSurgery #BlackintheIvory
This was just the beginning of it I found. When things weren’t working out with my research mentor, I went to my program director for support, and to look into switching labs. @BIDMCSurgery
Instead of assisting me through meetings and contacts as we had discussed. She went behind my back and told my PI I had complained to her. My PI started calling me daily in the middle of the night with harassing phone calls. @BIDMCSurgery #BlackintheIvory

Born in 1867 in Cincinnati, OH, 2 years after the Civil War, son of a church custodian and a nurse, Charles graduated valedictorian from Woodward HS (@ItsBlue_AllDay) and went on to attend the University of Cincinnati (@uofcincy).

He graduated from @uofcincy with his BA in 1891, and his MS in 1892, becoming the FIRST African American to receive a graduate degree from the University of Cincinnati. During this time, he also spent a year doing research at the Cincinnati Observatory (@CinObservatory).
