Vandaag wordt voor de vijfde keer de internationale ‘AML World Awareness Day’ gehouden om aandacht te vragen voor acute myeloïde leukemie (#AML), een zeldzame vorm van bloedkanker. #NKRdata #leusm #leukemia #bloodcancer #KnowAML @IKNL @KNOW_AML @HematonNL (1/16)
AML treft momenteel ruim 750 patiënten per jaar in Nederland (zie figuur).

👧 Supporting your child's mental health 👦

(A thread...)
👨‍👩‍👦 Our Support Services Team have been hearing from lots of people who's children are experiencing anxiety around going to school, and are worried about the risk of bringing the virus home with them and infecting a parent who has #bloodcancer. 1/
🏥 This is a difficult situation for both children and parents. Sometimes, your treatment team might have access to psychological support for your children or teenagers, or an option to get support as family – it's worth asking. 2/

1/ "How long have I had it for?"

Our patients with #bloodcancer have always wanted to know. We set out to answer it. We studied patients with MPN #mpnsm and found quite unexpected results. Excited to share our preprint biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
2/ We took single blood cells from patients with MPN and grew each cell into a colony. We then sequenced each colony's whole genome (>950 whole genomes).
3/ We used DNA mutations to trace the ancestral relationships between colonies - building a "family tree" of blood production for each patient. We could then time the cancer driving genetic events and trace how the mutant clones expanded over the patient’s life.

📆 Today is #CancerSurvivorsDay 📆

Here at Blood Cancer UK, we want to use today to raise awareness of what #survival means to those who live with slow-growing (chronic) #bloodcancer, and share some of their stories.

Read the rest of our thread to find out more.... 👇
👨‍👩‍👦As many of our community will know, surviving blood cancer can be a very different experience to overcoming some other types of cancer.

🔎For those with chronic blood cancer, 'survival' means learning to adapt and finding new ways of living to accommodate ongoing symptoms.
😴 This is the case for Erica, who has chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and experiences extreme tiredness (fatigue) as a result.
