Earlier, I made a thread about how patriarchy impacts women. And how it is systemic, shocking & repetitive.

I also want to talk about how patriarchy affects young men, leading to male aggression online, based on my understanding from the #YuvaaRoadshow.

#Thread #boyslockerroom
I met 10,000+ students in 100+ colleges on the roadshow over 2 years. We tried creating safe spaces to listen & to understand their mental health & identity issues. We found:

1. The top issue for young women is harassment/body shaming.
2. The top one for young men is loneliness.
It was disturbing to hear the volume of stories about assault, shaming, & colourism from young women who spoke up, sometimes in classrooms full of students.

At the same time, most of them also spoke about acceptance from their female friends & being hyped by their 'girl tribes'.

A thread on the entire Boys Locker Room episode, calling out / cancel culture, men not feeling like they're given equal attention to women when it comes to issues.

I'm super annoyed with the narrative forming around this. And I generally don't want to come across as preachy. Cus I'm in no position to say anything, I'm not an expert, student of the arts and most importantly I'M NOT A WOMAN.
Listen to them!!!!

But unfortunately in our society, a lot of such guys are more receptive to things / don't discount these takes when a man says it.
Cus they automatically undermine anything a woman says :'/

So I think this needs to be said. One more time for the people in the back.

When @NCWIndia @MinistryWCD promote & support such activities by women & don’t take action against them, what are they preaching to young minds(boys & girls),when boys do same act, they are declared as criminals.
As a nation are we converting our young generations into criminals
@NCWIndia @MinistryWCD @DCWDelhi any action against these girls or India has become liberal and promotes such acts by girls.
#girlsLockerRoom #boysLockerRoom
@DelhiPolice @PMOIndia @HMOIndia if you can’t take action against these girls are you creating gender biased culture dividing the country, defining different laws for girls & boys #girlsLockerRoom vs #boysLockerRoom, making #CrimeByWoman legal

Thread:

The recent boys locker room controversy has given rise to a lot of girls gathering courage and coming out with their own stories of dark & disgraceful incidents, leading further to the debate regarding how social justice functions take an entirely fresh perspective.
Many of such stories that I have personally been able to read belong to the highly acknowledged Model UN circuit in our country, of which I had been a part too in the past.
There have been some highly influential and well-known people against whom such allegations have been put, and it shocks my conscience that I knew some of them really well.

The #boyslockerroom got exposed because like the subreddit about a college in Chennai, this group was accessible to someone outside. What are we going to do about the porn-sharing WhatsApp groups in literally every HS/college class of boys? Do you think they don't exist? Ask boys
or if you've won the trust of teenagers, ask any girl too (though of course not all girls might be privy to the exact contents) but every teenager KNOWS that these groups exist and that their classmates are active part of it. We live in a country where the idea of sex ed is still
considered scandalous. We live among repressed teens who are turning to all the wrong sources for both information and validation of their behavior. The roots of this rot run deeper than what a 2-minute PSA or an occasional slap on the wrist can check. It's in our family system;

My brain has given up trying to go through the stories and comments on #boyslockerroom. I’m disappointed at myself, and it has triggered memories from school and college. But this is not about me. 1/10
In no way, something like #boyslockerroom should be entertained at any level. There are laws that are in place to deal with situations like this and it's important that accountability is demanded. 2/10
But to see #boyslockerroom and the direction it’s going in can be overwhelming for a lot of us. Remember that it’s not about you, a person. It’s about the sexism and misogynistic thinking that’s so pervasive that me, you and your friends participate in it and defend it. 3/10

If you know teenagers within your family/other circles, I encourage you to talk to them. Talk to them about their stressors, struggles, relationships, sex, school, college, build a relationship with them. Try. Reassure them that they have a safe space for honest communication.
I am talking about this for all gender and sexual identities. Violence is a structural issue and vulnerability to violence is much higher with the hyperconnectedness that the internet allows for, these days.
Cis gendered boys are conditioned into believing that being violent in language and behaviour is an exercise of dominance and a display of power, and rape culture creates a very helpful environment for this to become an ideological belief.

The #boyslockerroom chats are disturbing, disgusting, shocking but ultimately, not surprising. This is an endlessly repetitive pattern that patriarchy has not only given rise to, by excusing boys for terrible behaviour ('boys will be boys'), but has actively encouraged.
#Thread
It starts with parenting and the way boys and girls are differentiated, sometimes within their own homes. There is always an onus on girls to behave, dress, act, and be 'achche ghar ki ladkiyan'. But boys can get away with anything, because 'ladke hain, yahi toh umar hai unki'.
In most homes, girls are taught about how to keep themselves safe, and what to do in uncomfortable situations, but in few homes, are boys taught about why girls feel unsafe and how to make sure girls don't feel uncomfortable. The onus of safety is always placed on the girls.

If anything, I have been further pushed to accept doxxing as a valid strategy to balance power dynamics in society. It's sad how hard people will defend these "kids".
Thread on the GC in delhi (1/idk how many I'm just about to rant)
When women who raise up against the trash behaviour displayed in this group chat are asked to "wear decent clothes first", it shows how far the patriarchy will go to protect the dominant in-group and will never keep equal requirements of social responsibility for all. (2/n)
How is it a 1sided obligation of women to "wear decent clothing" but not for these "kids" to literally morph underage girls' pictures, issue rape threats randomly, make lewd & hyper sexualised comments as well as share without consent? Why do we accept this? #boyslockerroom (3/n)

Here’s a thread on the whole #boyslockerroom incident, while this is very common they seldom get called out. I came across @NiskaNagpal’s stories on Instagram and hence posting all of them here.
A screenshot of the perpetrators active/inactive.
Note: Your inactivity doesn’t matter since you’ve been silently allowing this to happen and not take any stance about it. #boyslockerroom
Even though these have been widely circulated, it’s such a long thread that to reach a large viewership only a few have been picked out to be posted/have been put as collages which is unfair to the issue altogether since every piece of info. holds accountability. #boyslockerroom

Thread: Students who are 16, 17 years old, are casually talking of gang raping girls and women, swapping nudes without the consent of these women on Reddit, with not even a hint of fear of exposure. The dire crisis of rape womxn face, starts with this rape culture #boyslockerroom
Tell us again how hanging four rapists in a day was supposed to strike fear in the hearts of men and boys? States can hang all the rapists they want, #boyslockerroom will continue unless the root cause of patriarchy, entitlement and toxic masculinity is addressed.
Every time the subject of sex & sexuality education is raised, it comes under the scanner of "what about Indian culture" whataboutery. Indian culture isn't sexual violence and disrespect of women. So unless schools compulsorily address what's happening, nothing is going to change
