Earlier this week, @DecrimSeattle & @KCEquityNow led a teach-in & presented to City Council steps + a road map of public safety can look like via scaling down investment for armed, militarized policing and scaling up community-based public safety investments.
I am committed to learning and listening in this work to defund our current status quo of public safety for one that serves *everyone.*

Seattle City Council is getting to work to revise the 2020 budget. I am committed to passing one that is anti-racist and defunds the police for community investments and interventions.

In addition to working with my colleagues in Seattle, I've joined @CMGirmayZahilay and @kate4spokane to call all WA State electeds to pledge to anti-racist budgeting and policymaking for system wide transformation, no matter where you live: docs.google.com/document/d/1MC…
Today's status quo is to call armed law enforcement to respond to issues that should be addressed by public health systems and community investments. How many more times do we have to see that go wrong to change this?
1/#BudgetingWithLorena 2019: today @SeattleCouncil is voting on the City's 2020 Budget. The budget puts our progressive values into action. It's an investment in the future that we want and that we can believe in.
2/ Through this budget, TeamLorena has:
▪️ fully funded our civilian-led police oversight agencies: the @SeattleOPA, @SeaOIG, and @SeaCPC
▪️ expanded the Regional Domestic Violence Firearm Enforcement Unit to get guns off our streets

We are in a childcare crisis with many families living in a service desert. We need comprehensive childcare strategies that support children, their families, and providers. These investments are good for families, good for workers, and good for business.

Our budget proposal “is designed to address the benefits cliff issue by looking at a rental subsidy program that will allow for people to continue to stay housed after finding housing stability,” said González.
We can help people at 50+ years old who are earning less than $1,000 a month on federal disability and who are either homeless or at risk of returning to homelessness w/an average benefit of $473 a month to qualified recipients.
Excited to put this forward with CM @Lisa_Herbold and the support of @Homeless2Housed, while we work collaboratively with members of our State's Legislature (@votenicolemacri) to identify a systemic fix to this gap! #BudgetingWithLorena
This is why I've made LEAD a top priority for my 2020 budget proposals! There are ~300 people on the wait list and they need a caseworker. Bringing LEAD to scale will help people access services they need while addressing public safety concerns. #BudgetingWithLorena
The Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) arrest diversion program is a collaborative effort that gives @SeattlePD officers an alternative to booking people into jail for criminal activity that stems from unmet behavioral health needs or poverty.
@SeattlePD Officers divert people engaged in low-level drug crime, prostitution, and crimes of poverty away from the criminal legal system to connect them w/intensive case managers who can provide crisis response, immediate psychosocial assessment, and long term wrap-around services.
City Council is holding a public hearing on the City's budget this evening at 5:30 at City Hall. Can't make it tonight? The next public hearing is 10/22 @ 5:30p.m.
