Monday's #Covid19 thread starts here. Still holidays around the world for many, including #UK. But here all eyes on Boris Johnson - will he, or won't he make more restrictions or even lockdown? We should know today.

I've got more hospital data in the thread, updated real time..
So let me start with #UK. I've managed to get new health data, which will be critical to the decision on new restrictions in #England

As of y'day there were 7,536 #Covid19 patients in English hospitals; up 17.1% in a week.

But 2,425 of those are in London and that's up 45.5%
Strangely, South-East & South-West areas of #England have fewer #Covid19 patients in hospital.

Occupied hospital beds by region (weekly change):

#London 2,425 +46%
#Midlands 1,345 +17%
#East 681 +16%
#NorthWest 945 +8%
#Yorkshire/NE 847 +3%
#SouthEast 803 -2%
#SouthWest 490 -5%

THREAD: Basil’s Campaigns in Bulgaria (Part Two) #Byzantine #medieval #bulgaria #varangian Image
In 1001 Basil marched his army from Constantinople to Preslav and Pliska, quickly taking the much weakened cities. Basil then took the city of Silistra on the Danube, beating back Bulgar counterattacks. With the north secure, Basil marched to Komotini in Thrace to winter. Image
In 1002, Basil continued the campaign by attacking key forts around Thessaloniki and recaptured Larissa. Once the area was secured, Basil moved back north to the Danube and besieged the castle of Vidin.

THREAD: Basil II’s Campaigns in Bulgaria (Part One)
#Byzantine #medieval #Bulgaria #varangian #warfare Image
Before we can talk about Basil’s conquest of Bulgaria, we need to provide some context and examine the Basileus first campaign and the failures that would shape his reign.
Basil’s dream had always been to succeed where no Basileus had before and conquer Bulgaria, but Basil’s early reign was marred by the rebellion of Bardas Skleros in Anatolia from 976-979. Tsar Samuel of Bulgaria took advantage of this unrest. Image

The UN #DurbanIV conference is a cesspool of discriminatory, anti-Israel propaganda.

“Zionism=Racism" is a vicious slander against the Jewish state and its supporters.

America and many allies stand proudly with Israel in boycotting this despicable conference.

Thursday's #Coronavirus megathread starts here with the best #Covid19 global analysis and round up available on Twitter.

First a little quiz, answer in the next Tweet:
Do you know which country has had the most recorded cases of Covid19 as a percentage of population?
So I hope there was no cheating... I'll leave some blank lines here too in case some later viewers don't want the answer just yet...
.
.
.
.
So the nation with more #Covid19 cases than any other based on population is highly vaccinated #Seychelles at more than 20% infected.
Today I spent quite a long time being filmed/interviewed by @bbcturkce about #Covid19 and #Turkey. Not sure how much they will use, let's see.

Coincidentally the cameraman Efe, just happened to be in Kyiv as one of those using Ukraine for a 10 day stop off to avoid hotel prison!

🔻The addresses we heard today were especially useful, if inescapably pessimistic, since as you know #PressFreedom in #Europe, is a crucial pillar of #EU #democracy.>>>

Had George Bush stayed away from Iraq, the situation today could have been different?
Saddam Hussein, a bloody tyrant that he was, at least kept the strategic balance of power in check from a sectarian perspective in the Middle East.
His removal unleashed the great schism between the rival school of thought, but, also shifted the focus away from #Afghanistan.
Iraq is reeling from the effects of the war that Blair and Bush launched based on fabricated grounds.
No WoMDs were found inside Iraq!
This was part of the greater #Neoconservative Plan based in Washington to weaken the Arab States, which could offer resistance to Israel.

It's a quite start today following the flurry of news last night..

So a lot of data and a couple of new stories came in during the last hour or so of Friday, including South America data.

You can catch up on #Argentina #Brazil #Colombia #Bulgaria #Norway stats, and some #OlympicGames news by clicking and scrolling ⬇️

Now more very concerning news from #Bahrain, one of the most vaccinated territories on the planet.

#Covid19 cases are still rising there - more worrying is the real increase in deaths too.

Finally, here is Friday's #Coronavirus megathread

🚦review imminent, I'm getting a lot of questions.
I reply to everyone but it's so time consuming
I'm now working on 7-day rates for EVERY Greek island.

No obligation but if my efforts are worth £1, thx

crowdfunder.co.uk/covid19-travel…
I'll continue to post free advice and data, so nothing will be hidden from anyone, so please don't be angry or upset! And yes you can still ask questions!

So the big news in UK today is that the single shot Jansen (J&J) #Covid19 vaccine has been approved

bbc.co.uk/news/health-57…
The big #Covid19 data news overnight is that #Argentina smashed its own record again, topping 40,000 cases in a day for the first time.

41,080 new cases to be precise, up around 15% on last week's total.
Another 547 new deaths

I've been looking a little more into the data behind this article this AM and want to focus on the need to look at the disaggregated figures - WHICH #EUcitizens are being turned away at the UK's borders is the question we should be asking #THREAD 1/

Guessing everyone can see #Romania there in the top spot? And by a loooooong way. Across this dataset for Q1 2021 it is unusual for any country to have numbers of refusals in triple figures—only Bulgaria (199), Poland (140), Eritrea (125) and Iraq (107) are in this category 3/

🇧🇬#Bulgaria 🇪🇺#EU #Sofia #Coronavirus

As of Wednesday, the holiday country Bulgaria will allow children up to the age of five from EU countries to enter the country without a corona test.
The regulation by Interim Health Minister Stojtscho Kazarov also applies to the entry of children from the Schengen countries, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the USA, Israel and several Balkan countries, among others.
At the same time, the entry of people from high-incidence corona countries, including India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Myanmar, as well as Brazil and numerous African countries, was temporarily prohibited.

🧵 So, I've been reporting on lower-league Bulgarian football, mostly played in villages and little towns, for about a year now.

🇧🇬 Here are some pictures and stories about small communities who love this game more than anything.
Valkosel is home to about 2700 people. For decades, the symbols of this village were tobacco and football. Now, it's just football. Here plays the team of "Strela" (Arrow). The population is mostly Muslim unlike the rest of the country. But the game brings people together.
Valkosel's stadium is nicknamed "The Cage". You can see why. Hundreds of people attend every game, even during the pandemic when they weren't allowed inside the ground. Not the friendliest atmosphere for a visiting side.

It's #Eurovision week!

After last year was cancelled, they're going ahead this year with a limited audience.

Here's this year's entries. My prediction: 🇲🇹#Malta will win.

More on that below in the thread you didn't ask for but are getting anyway (1/21).
You might ask: this is 1st & foremost a TV show with theoretically no need for performers to be in same place, why was 2020 cancelled (for 1st time in 65 years)?

Answer: Eurovision rules are strict. There wasn't enough time to change them to allow contestants to compete remotely
#Netherlands is hosting this year in Rotterdam, because they won in 2019 with Arcade.

I'll be heading up there to cover it, luckily it's just 90 minutes away.

The rules are quite strict: constant testing & separation of audience, contestants and press.
