I'm more of a Charter-@GetSpectrum hostage than a customer: I need the internet to earn my living, and my town (#Burbank) has signed an exclusive deal with Charter, so I send them $134.99/mo for some of the worst internet in California.

It turns out that Charter doesn't stop abusing you when you stop being a customer: the company is now sending threatening letters ("offers") to ex-customers demanding that they sign up again on pain of a bad credit report.

2/
That's not how Charter puts it, of course. They say they're extending a lifeline to ex-customers whose years-unpaid bills are in collection, trashing their credit.

One of the weird ironies of living in the US and having family, friends and colleagues abroad is the vast, iniquitous gap in vaccine availability based on where you live, and, more particularly, whether you live in a poor country or a rich one.

#VaccineApartheid is a global terror and horror, but that's not the "ironic" part. That would be the American vaccine deniers who have effectively killed the dream of herd immunity, and taken anti-vax from a threat to public health to a threat to civilization itself.

Hey, @burbankca - LA County is starting its curfews at 9PM. You're sending us all to our rooms without supper at 5PM. There is no mass unrest in #Burbank. We've seen small, peaceful protests.
The local merchants who boarded up at the suggestion of Burbank PD covered their storefronts with #BLM signs. What conceivable justification do you have for this onerous condition that you have unilaterally imposed on a while city?
Our employers expect us to be online until 5PM. How are our families to exercise together? When do dog owners walk their dogs?

Honestly, I expected better from this city and its council. This is bad governance.

.@GetSpectrum is the garbage company I have to buy my internet from, due to their monopolistic arrangement with my city, #Burbank.

Charter doesn't give its field techs hazard pay or PPE. Instead they get $25 gift cards for (closed down) restaurants.

Charter's CEO, Thomas Rutledge, an asshole, decreed that back-office staff would have to keep going to work, even if they could work from home, on the theory that they would be more productive under the watchful eye of their managers.

You will never, ever guess what happened next.

At least 230 Charter employees now have covid-19. NY AG Letitia James has opened an inquiry into corporate culpability in their illness.

I've been working on digital human rights for nearly 20 years now, and I remember how the idea was once widely mocked as a distraction.

Back in 2009, Finland was derided for declaring broadband a human right.

And even by Malcolm Gladwell standards, this 2010 take on the uselessness of online activism has not aged well.

The GOP and @AjitPaiFCC's attacks on the #Lifeline fund to bring broadband to rural and disadvantaged Americans are modern versions of the infection that says that the digital divide is a frivolity.
