1/Thinking of #trees #peat #carbon and #nature and #fires. When are Victorians (without hysterics @theage ) to be made fully aware of the State #auslaws over fines in State Parks for picking up a rock, walking off track and so on. @DanielAndrewsMP/2
2/As it is now there are hundreds of shooting licensed people walking off track. Hundreds of thousands of feral deer, xrabbits,x pigs (latter two a food, anti #poverty source that cannot be culled by shooters) already damaging #native wildlife.Protecting #Indigenous locations/3
3/ @DanielAndrewsMP is key but to lock up (by fines) large areas is #segregation and discrimination. To lock up but then ok if you pay — is a cynical misuse of power. It would be good to hear from #Indigenous Victoria as we already know the value of the birthing trees was/4

The number of forest fires in Brazil reached a new ten-year high in 2020. In the past year, there were over 222,000 forest fires, as the Brazilian space agency Inpe announced after evaluating satellite images.
This corresponds to an increase of 12.7 percent compared to the previous year. The agency counted more than 103,000 fires in the Amazon rainforest, an increase of 16 percent from 2019. Under President Jair Bolsonaro,
who has been in office since January 2019 and is considered a notorious climate skeptic, the destruction of the rainforest in Brazil has increased dramatically. Environmental requirements were weakened under Bolsonaro.

Firefighters were sent to two bushfires as Mandurah south of Perth woke up to its hottest day in December, hitting 31C by 9am local time, one of them along one of the city's main roads.
On the south side of Old Coast Road in Erskine, just south of Halls Head, at about 1 pm local time this afternoon, helicopters were seen dousing the fire for around an hour.
A bushfire alert was given, with residents warned of heavy smoke in the area. The fire's trigger is still unclear. And a bushfire warning was also released for parts of Coodanup, south of the area, just before 3.30pm.

Scott Morrison’s Deputy PM today in the @australian whines that “it really annoys me that I think states have been let off the hook largely this summer”. Here’s a few things that annoy me, about the recent bushfires...
@australian It really annoys me that, as we learned at Senate #estimates this week, Scott Morrison was warned “on multiple occasions” about the risk the bushfires posed, but he did nothing.

I'd like to remind you that we're only at the beginning of 2020 and in less than two months, a lot of things happened around the world, especially in China with the #Coronavirus !
I'm gonna give three other examples:

1: The attack in #Germany.

2: Ex-candidate to #Paris town hall in France @BGriveaux who's sending some videos of ... his fucking Dick to a foreigner.

3: The explosions of anti-Semitism acts almost everywhere in the world !
I can also say that #Bushfire in #Australia is still current !

🔴(Thread) How to explore the #NSWbushfires 🔥 yourself? Use the #EOBrowser to search recent images in the affected areas. When you've found a #bushfire, export a true color image such as this one. ➡️apps.sentinel-hub.com/eo-browser/?la… #NSWbushfires #RemoteSensing #OpenData #scicomm 1/6
Once you have done that, you can use the False color (Urban) visualization to go further, peek through the smoke and detect hot spots with possible active fires like in this image here. It also makes the burn scar more visible. ➡️ apps.sentinel-hub.com/eo-browser/?la… 2/6
Additionally you can then use the SWIR visualization to even better show the burned areas, which show up in reddish tones. Take a look at this image. ➡️ apps.sentinel-hub.com/eo-browser/?la… 3/6

With the #bushfires still ongoing, it is clear that we are in the middle of a historic event, that will change the way we manage fire in the environment.
A few people have asked me for an explainer - so here is a thread from a bushfire protection planning perspective:
2. As a scientist I am mostly focused on the practical problems that we have encountered, and how we can solve these and then anticipate the next set.
I have worked in the aftermath of two major fire events, and will be working in the aftermath of this one.
The Canberra #bushfires saw a major investment in infrastructure focused on early attack - upgrades to 70km of fire trails, ridge-top water supply tanks and supply ponds for aerial units.
These worked quite well in allowing more aggressive early control.
