Introduces witnesses: @marcomendicino and a string of officials from RCMP, PS, CBSA, DOJ.

The Docs and @najmadoc have written an article in @TIME trying to sway the government to ban most semi-automatic firearms in Canada.

Its time for another fact check.

Right off the hop they frame “military-style assault weapons” to include any semiautomatic firearm with a detachable magazine (while also giving a nod to the SKS).

This has never been established as accurate. It’s one reason Canadians pushed back so hard on the amendments.
A claim is made that such bans, “are supported by public health science.” None is provided (at least at this point).

They also claim “They would bring Canada’s gun control laws closer in line with other peer nations.”

I said I’d do a thread on the Docs thread of alleged evidence supporting Bill C21 and it’s gun bans.

Here we go.

First, a vague 20 year old statement that I somewhat agree with. I support some gun laws that Canada has had for decades.

Their cited link takes us nowhere though.
Next they cited two Canadian studies on firearm legislation and suicide. Of special note: their links are just to the main page at NIH, not any actual study. Sloppy at best, incompetent more likely.
The first explored the after effects of Bill C-17 in 1991. It found firearm homicide and suicide rates fell after the bill.

It also reinforced the “displacement” phenomenon in Canada, where firearm suicides dropped, but overall suicides did not. The method of suicide changed.

Regularly receive questions on why I discuss Indigenous-specific issues when it comes to firearms so often when #BillC21 impacts most lawful firearm owners in Canada for no additional public safety benefit.

It's a good question. I'd like to go into some of the reasons:
First, the government has a specific duty to consult and accommodate Indigenous peoples in areas that adversely impact established Indigenous legal rights. Hunting is a well-established Indigenous right. #C21 adversely impacts it by prohibiting important tools.
The #Liberal government makes a grand theatre of respecting #Indigenous rights but regularly fails to follow through. This is one such instance. The government failed to hold a single meeting specific to the central issue of #C21 (the ban) with Indigenous groups.

LIAR. The liberals are literally legislating the gun problem in 🇨🇦

In 2022 alone, Bill #C22 and #C5 passed which directly reduces minimums for violent gun offences. Statscan shows every move Trudeau has made, resulted in a spike

@TWilsonOttawa #cdnpoli #C21 #C22
@CCFR_CCDAF🇨🇦 ImageImage
#C22 No more minimums:

-Use of firearm in commission of offence
-Possession of loaded handgun
-Weapons trafficking
-Unauthorized import/export of firearm
-Robbery with firearm
-Extortion with firearm
-Illegal discharge of a firearm with intent

These are serious+violent offences
Continued

Even stealing guns is no big deal to @marcomendicino

-Possession of restricted or prohibited weapon knowing possession is unauthorized
-Possession of weapon obtained through crime

Todays #LiveTweet thread on #SECU as the committee continues to study the assault on legal hunters and firearms owners. #C21 🇨🇦

Let’s go!! ⤵️⤵️⤵️⤵️⤵️ Image
Chair begins, land acknowledgment. Makes note they’ve got until 1:30 today (2.5 hrs). Welcomes back officials from Public Safety, Justice. Resumes clause by clause. Currently on G4 (hunting gun ban). Chiang seeks unanimous consent to release “list” of newly banned hunting guns
Point of Order Lloyd: wants clarity on motion. Members agree to publish list. Damoff complains CSSA breached privilege and had published protected info. Damoff says this isn’t a hunting gun ban and refers to NZ etc and their semi auto ban. Says they’re weapons of war.

Late start - but here we go. Chair welcomes everyone. This is the start of clause by clause. Witnesses will do Q&A but no opening statements.

Dancho begins. Asks about procedural issues, scope of bill. No further questions. They begin.
Dancho brings up amendment G4, G46: outside the scope of the bill. Dancho brings up amendment G4, which is a ban on almost all semi auto rifles and shotguns. Point of order by Damoff. Dancho agains brings up massive ban included in amendment?? Damoff objects, confidentiality

Ok here we go!!! #LiveTweet thread 🧵 for #SECU meeting on #C21 🇨🇦

We’ve got a mix of anti gun lobby groups and community advocates.
@DanforthFSC begin. Price details the events of the #DanforthShooting - a tragic act of violence committed by a gang related criminal with a stolen gun. Supports #C21 but will focus on the handgun “freeze”. Says legal handguns contribute to violence.
Says their own experience (with stolen gun from gang ties) is evidence of that. Reports that traced guns are 2x more likely to come from Canada not US. Says the freeze is necessary. Is worried about the exemptions for elite sport shooters.

Today marks 1 year since our government chose to do more than offer only thoughts and prayers in response to gun violence.

On May 1, 2020, we took decisive action to prohibit the sale, use, and importation of 1,500 assault-style firearms designed for military use.
In Canada and around the world, we’ve seen examples of the devastation that gun violence can cause – at École Polytechnique de Montréal in 1989, in Quebec City in 2017, and most recently in Nova Scotia last year.
Of the Five Eyes countries that have prohibited these firearms, none have experienced a single mass shooting this year.

Our plan to remove these dangerous firearms from our communities and keep Canadians safe is working.
