Today’s #HistoricElectionWednesday thread details the ten African American U.S. Senators. During Reconstruction, Mississippi elected two Republicans, Hiram R. Revels and Blanche Bruce. It is the only state where both Senate seats have been filled by African Americans. #MSSen
From 1881-1966, no African American served in the Senate. In that year, Edward Brooke (R-MA) won election to an open seat by 22 points, becoming the first African American to be popularly elected to the Senate. In 1972, he won by 29 points, but he later lost in 1976. #MASen
In 1992, Carol Moseley-Braun (D-IL) became the first African American female Senator. Moseley-Braun upset incumbent Alan Dixon in the primary and then defeated Richard Williamson by 11 points. She narrowly lost reelection in 1998, however, to Peter Fitzgerald. #ILSen 3/9
