Before deciding whether Nikolas Cruz should be given the death penalty, his attorneys are asking jurors to consider the Parkland School shooter’s mental health and dysfunctional family history.
During trial on Monday, Cruz’s lawyer highlighted his mother’s abuse of drugs and alcohol during pregnancy. His lawyer also says Cruz showed signs of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and antisocial personality disorder, CNN reports.
Cruz has plead guilty to 17 counts of murder and 17 counts of attempted murder, for the 2018 shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty while Cruz’s defense attorneys are asking for life in prison without parole.
The 11 men who were serving life in prison for gang rape and murders during the 2002 Gujarat riots, are now free, Indian media reports. The men were freed on Monday after the state government approved their application for remission of sentence.
The state says their application was considered because of the “completion of 14 years” in jail. Life sentences in India typically carry a 14 year jail term.
