News from #CHOGM2022: Following my working sessions and meetings with leaders, we’re announcing support to improve people’s lives around the world. This includes funding for education and international scholarships – to give more opportunities to more people.
We’re also providing funding for initiatives that will support gender equality in Commonwealth countries. This includes support for sexual and reproductive health and rights in Nigeria, as well as for research projects that will improve health systems and pandemic preparedness.
On top of that, we’re investing in different initiatives to expand access to information and to promote nature-based solutions for fighting climate change. This investment will also help with different projects that support peace and security throughout the African continent.

It's not "racist" or "condescending" to point out that shipping vulnerable people more than 4,000 miles away to a country with a record of human rights abuses is absolutely inhumane. Everyone should be using #CHOGM2022 to condemn the UK government's deportation plan. 1/ #r4today
We're not talking about "sending people home", as has been claimed by a number of people, when highlighting how forcibly transporting asylum seekers to a country where they don't speak the language, know anyone, and face serious risks of trafficking is fundamentally wrong. 2/
You can't even claim "UNHCR says it is okay" when UNHCR has had to go to court and say the government is lying to refugees about its involvement. UNHCR uses Rwanda as a TEMPORARY transit point. The UK is talking about forcing them to live there for the rest of their lives. 3/

The World Bank estimates that more than 200 million people can be forced to migrate due to climate change by 2050. There is no doubt about it: the climate crisis forces migration.

#CHOGM2022 @CMW87network @WalkFree
Climate change exacerbates vulnerabilities for those already most at risk of modern slavery and human trafficking. It increases inequality and drives migration – which are both risk factors for exploitation.
The links between climate change and modern slavery cannot be ignored.

We will host an event with @CMW87network and @WalkFree, discussing impacts of the #ClimateCrisis on #ModernSlavery, exploring challenges, good practices, and the roles of civil society and State actors.

Violence against women and girls is a global pandemic that affects 1 in 3 women in their lifetime. 35% of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence. This is unacceptable.
CHRI UK's Director, Sneh Aurora, moderated yesterday’s discussion on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls at #CHOGM2022.
“Addressing gender-based violence requires a community-based, multipronged approach and sustained engagement with multiple stakeholders,” Sneh Aurora said.

UPDATE 🧵: 7 people still with tickets for Rwanda 2day. 2 Iraqi Kurdish, 3 Iranian, 1 Albanian & 1 Vietnamese. All have some form of legal action taking place 2day. But this is a race against time #StopTheFlights #StopRwanda #StopThePlane #Rwanda50 #NotInMyName (1/10)
One only got decent legal representation YESTERDAY - all had enormous difficulties finding representation in detention. It is a LIE to say they have had chance to make their cases - there is no time, everything is in English & getting a solicitor is no easy task (2/10)
1 is in Brook House, the remaining 6 are in Colnbrook. 2 have expressed suicidal thoughts to us. 1 reports scaring all over his body from torture. This flight is inhumane & must be stopped #StopRwanda #StopTheFlights #StopThePlane (3/10)
