This thread is a story about 'The Beasts of Oseberg'- five exquisitely carved and mysterious #Viking Age objects @kulturhistorisk
Photo: Kirsten Helgeland
@Kulturhistorisk Many will have seen pictures of these animal heads found in the ship burial of Oseberg, AD 834. The heads where originally five in number: The Academic, The Lions head, The Carolingian and The Baroque head no.1 and no.2.
Photo: Kirsten Helgeland
@Kulturhistorisk Each head is about 50 cm in length. A straight handle (50-75cm) was attached near the base. If held by the handle only it would be possible but not easy to balance the head upright. Besides the handle the heads are not parts of a vehicle or furniture. Their use seem inscrutable.

#Inktober catch up 31/31 #Cuckoo #inktoberredlist I had to finish off with the cuckoo, as they symbolise for me what has been called 'shifting baseline' syndrome. My 'nature' base line of growing up the UK in the 70's was full of insects, and birds.
Huge flocks of sparrows, starlings and lapwing. So many flies and insects that we needed a fly screen on the back door. Thunderbugs and ladybird swarms. The car bonnet covered in insects after a short journey. The sound of cuckoo's every Spring. Dead hedgehogs on the roads!
That was my 'normal'. For most of my children's generation that has changed, to the point where they don't even know the names of everyday birds, because they've never seen one. @robgmacfarlane and @JackieMorrisArt writing a book, The Lost Words, to help children 'rediscover' and

With #Halloween approaching, what haunts you? I often worry about how quickly #animals are going extinct, and especially #frogs. Here's some of the ways your support can help me prevent then from becoming #environmental ghosts: patreon.com/MyFrogCroaked #FridayFeeling #FrogFriday
Did you know? Many baby #frogs (tadpoles) act as “river lawn mowers” by grazing on algae and plant material that falls into rivers. Their presence helps protect clean water which people and #wildlife both depend on. #FrogFriday
Also, #frogs may help control the spread of human #diseases spread by #insects, like #malaria, dengue & Zika. The tadpoles of some frog species are carnivorous & kill mosquito eggs & larvae. Keeping frogs healthy can help keep people healthy too patreon.com/MyFrogCroaked #OneHealth

Visiting #LaReunion allowed for a very special adventure with my 8-month old son. We wanted to see one of the rarest birds in the world before it disappeared: the Reunion Cuckoo-shrike.

This is a thread about #birds, #birding, fatherhood, #biodiversity and #extinction ... 1/13
@Team_eBird @BirdLife_News @BirdWatchingMag @Natures_Voice @WildlifeMag @Britnatureguide @RareBirdAlertUK @extinctsymbol @BirdNoteRadio 2. What does #extinction mean? What does it feel like? How does our species internalise, let alone rationalise, the loss of another?

Perhaps, like the Universe itself, the #anthropocene sixth mass extinction is too big, too abstract, just too *much*, for us to absorb.
@Team_eBird @BirdLife_News @BirdWatchingMag @Natures_Voice @WildlifeMag @Britnatureguide @RareBirdAlertUK @extinctsymbol @BirdNoteRadio 3. So let's focus on just one species: a bird few have heard of, and fewer would likely think or care about. A type of cuckoo-shrike found only on #Reunion, the next-door island to my home in #Madagascar.

A bird from an island where avian extinctions have already occurred.

Stoked to announce @ZooKeys_Journal published our @BatumiRaptors data paper! It explains how our #citizenscience project monitors the autumn #migration of >1.000.000 #raptors in the Eastern Black Sea Flyway, and how to use our #openaccess data @GBIF/@NLBIF! - 1/n

#ornithology
Many #raptors migrate primarily by thermal #soaring. To do so they travel by day and avoid high mtns and open sea. This leads to spectacular raptor aggregations in overland #flyways. One of the world´s largest raptor flyways occurs along the eastern Black Sea coast in SW Georgia.
The Eastern Black Sea Flyway has its narrowest point just north of #Batumi, where the coast and Lesser Caucasus form a clear "bottleneck". The mtns are not extremely high but present a significant barrier for #raptors on #migration due to low and dense cloud cover. @BatumiRaptors

First of all, what is EMEND? This is a @NSERC_CRSNG funded experimental harvest area where researchers are able to study the effects of retention #harvest strategies on biodiversity, soil properties + more. (2/8)
'Retention harvest' means keeping some trees either individually or as patches after harvest. This might help improve #conservation of #biodiversity within the area & can be used to mimic natural disturbance patterns. (3/8)

When I was a kid, the Singapore river verged on being an open sewer. And otters were thought extinct on the island.

How do you help critically-endangered pangolins cross the road?

Build a eco-link!

These wildlife bridges (not open to people) connect rainforest reserves in Singapore.

At a cost of $12M each, they are still thought worth it. #urbangreening #gardencity

A new study came out with some pretty interesting stuff: It turns out that restoring U.S. lands & coastal wetlands could reduce global warming much more than we previously thought! #conservationoptimism #conservation nytimes.com/2018/11/14/cli…
"Better management of forests, grasslands, and soils in the U.S. could offset as much 21% of the country's annual greenhouse gas emissions -- roughly the same as taking away every single car and truck in the country off the road." (NYT)
This study advances.sciencemag.org/content/4/11/e… is the first to include the climate benefits of coastal wetlands & grasslands in a comprehensive mix along w/ forests and agriculture. (Source) & more info here: enn.com/articles/56040…

For the past 3 months, we have been privileged to host Keiko Nakata from Japan on Ol Pejeta. In collaboration with Robert Lochiam, an Ol Pejeta ranger who is an incredibly talented artist, they drew this amazing artwork of an elephant and a rhino.
#conservation #WorthMoreAlive
The canvas has messages from various Ol Pejeta employees that Keiko will share with her friends and colleagues back in Japan. Keiko regularly works as a volunteer at a zoo in Japan and the artwork will go a help raise awareness on the effects of poaching in her homeland.
She will also do a similar banner with messages supporting our wildlife conservation work from her friends in Japan.
