This is the first digital version of my zine, Slow Dwelling, which ran from 2012-2013 and focused on crip time, plant time, and moon time. Here, I share my technique for using a garden-planning temporality that my grandfather taught me (growing by the moon phases) to plan time.

So much of my DH is STILL #digped & daily DH editorial duties on *Digital Pedagogy in the Humanities* (59 authors, people!) and a forthcoming Syllabus Journal special cluster (yay for pushing out almost-done pubs for our authors when e/t is getting severely delayed) #dayofdh2020 cover of digital pedagogy i...
That means a lot of my DH is stuff that doesn’t get seen - *Digital Pedagogy in the Humanities* goes a long way to correct that with #digped & one of the key reasons @mkgold @FrostDavis & I wrote the intro w/a history of the project bit.ly/2KNiSQs #DayofDH2020
@mkgold @FrostDavis It’s also why we begin at the beginning — 2010 — by chronicling 1st convos about this project bw me & @jenterysayers that produced a bunch of #digped workshops & a (not accepted) book proposal (w/the response from publisher that DHers won’t be interested in #digped ) #DayofDH2020 text of introduction to dig...

Know your students: they may be thinking more about food, housing, or childcare than they are about their education right now. @saragoldrickrab #RealCollege #CovidCampus Image

In case any one is interested or very bored, I'm gonna thread my teaching adjustment plans/progress over the next few days. Today is the first day I've had without teaching or meetings since the crisis really heated up in Aus, so it's time to get stuck in. #highered #Corvid19
First up, some context. I'll be talking about two courses that are core to an urban and environmental planning program - Public Involvement & Community Development (PICD), and (Advanced) Development Processes Studio (DPS).
DPS is a double weighted, full day class. Yup, we spend 6-8 hours together in an overly full room, huddled over desks in small groups, reading things on each other's laptops, sharing materials. Not great.

My thoughts and recommendations on ad hoc online teaching initiatives due to #covid19 #educovid19 #COVIDsyllabus #CovidCampus #covid19edu #teletrabajodocente #edtech (thread follows) cc @GeorgeMasonU @GeorgeMasonCHSS
1. I understand that faculty who have never taught online (or have done it under normal circumstances) are very concerned about this unexpected but necessary move to virtual teaching.
2. Concerns include but are not limited to:

Q: Ahhh! I’m abruptly teaching an in-person class remotely with zero prep time or past experience. Help??

A: Ohno. Let’s load you up with survival tactics.

1. Lower your expectations.

Converting classes is a $2.5-$5k, 6-12 month job. It’s substantial labour to do well.
2. Deliver straight lectures? Record them.

PowerPoint > Slideshow > Record lecture to create audio synced with slides.

ProTip: Enable automatic subtitles & image descriptions for greater accessibility. Proof them!

Caution: Clean your “Notes” section.
3. Deliver lectures with frequent questions? Stream them and monitor for text questions.

Software depends on your university licenses, but you can always use YouTube or Twitch as a fallback.

ProTip: Record & upload to mitigate student software crashes.

My university just announced that we are shifting all courses #online for several weeks due to #coronavirus. I spent the last month on jury duty & as a result had to unexpectedly move my class online with no notice. I've got some thoughts (thread): #AcademicTwitter #CovidCampus
Before you do anything else, take a minute & look at your syllabus & course schedule. One of the things I realized was that in an online setting there were a number of topics that made more sense in a different order than in the face-to-face scenario I originally laid out. (2/16)
Whatever your course topic is, at some point, you are going to stare into that webcam & think about lecturing for an hour. Don't do it. If you do decide to record a video lecture keep it short. Like under 10 minutes - although the research says they should be even shorter. (3/16)

I started teaching composition online in 2008. Here are some things I've learned over the years (a thread). #onlinelearning #digped #teamrhetoric #WPAlife
There are REASONS why online courses have higher DWF (drop/withdraw/fail) rates. One huge reason is that these courses can feel impersonal. Another is a lack of feeling accountable. Anything we as instructors can do to the improve the affective element of the course is critical.
I make many choices in my online courses to humanize the student experience. One key element of my #pedagogy is to respond to students' work via screencasting. Screencasting allows students to hear my voice and see my screen as I am grading their papers/digital projects.
