Remember my @DemocracyNow report on that gutsy little non-profit bank that took on Goldman Sachs? The Lower East Side People's Federal Credit Union (@LESPeoplesFCU) is owned by its customers, including Occupy Wall Street, 80% low-income Hispanics... gregpalast.com/goldman-sachs-…
You can help them out, stick it to Goldman, and put cash in your pocket by applying for a Payroll Protection Program (PPP) loan this week through them. lespeoples.org/small-business…

Biden’s new #COVIDRelief bill allows gig workers like me to get a loan equal to about 21% of your annual REVENUE shown on your Schedule C. It’s a loan you don’t have to pay back! (Thanks Joe!) And the Credit Union gets a fee for each loan. Help yourself—and fund the revolution!

🚨BREAKING: The Senate passed the $1.9 trillion #AmericanRescuePlan, providing necessary relief to our communities—including 2.2 mil. more people in mixed-status families. Though we celebrate this victory, the bill once again unfairly excludes 9.3 mil. immigrants from relief. 1/
Rejecting @SenTedCruz’s effort to block stimulus checks for undocu immigrants is a big win for immigrant communities. 2.2 million additional families will now be included in relief.

This is the result of advocates who organized to ensure inclusion of ALL of our communities. 2/
We’ve said it before, but we’ll say it again: There is no COVID recovery without immigrants. EVERYONE, including immigrants, must have access to COVID relief, testing & vaccines. 3/

Although the $1.9 trillion COVID relief bill under consideration addresses some key needs, some pieces could be better targeted. A redesigned plan could still provide the support necessary to fight the virus and support a strong economic recovery.
The House #COVIDrelief package includes about $312B of policies developed long before the #COVID crisis, not in response to it. Many of these policies are worthwhile but should be paid for and made permanent parts of the tax code or budget.
Policymakers could offset these policies by raising the top individual income tax rate for high earners back to 39.6% or increasing the corporate income tax rate.

The #COVIDRelief bill making its way through House committees this week includes vital provisions that would make comprehensive coverage more affordable and accessible for millions of people. More in this new @CenteronBudget paper: cbpp.org/research/healt… 1/5
Under the proposal, people with income below 150 percent of the poverty line (about $19,000 for a single person and $39,000 for a family of four) would pay no premiums for a benchmark plan, after accounting for premium tax credits. 2/5
Other folks would see big premium drops. A single individual making $30,000 would pay $85 rather than $195 per month in premiums for a benchmark plan with reduced deductibles and other cost-sharing. A family of four making $50,000 would pay $67 per month rather than $252. 3/5

The jobs report released last week showed that 140,000 jobs were lost in December. The latest #CovidRelief bill doesn't provide enough relief. The larger risk for the nation isn't providing enough economic stimulus & hardship relief.

A thread. cbpp.org/research/econo…
People of color, who have experienced disproportionate hardship in the pandemic & recession, & who historically have waited longest to see the fruits of an economic recovery, are also the most at-risk right now.

cbpp.org/research/econo…
Private & government payrolls combined fell by 140,000 jobs, which is larger in percentage than the deficit in the worst month of the Great Recession (6.3%). Long-term unemployment of 27 weeks+ again rose sharply, & racial disparities in employment outcomes remained wide.

I used to be an @GOP voter. I started life as an @TheDemocrats but as I grew older and worked in conservative environments later in life, my voting trended that way as well. Some of it was pure self-interest. It happened that my highest earning years coincided with Republican 1)

Thread: today, new data from the Census Pulse show that millions of Americans are still struggling to afford food and rent. This economic crisis is far from over for many, and policymakers need to do more to make sure families can put food on the table. /1 #COVIDRelief
Census data from September 2-14 show that about 10% of all adults reported their household sometimes or often didn’t have enough to eat in the last 7 days, more than twice the share of adults who reported this at any point in 2019 (3.7%). /2
Because of longstanding inequities exacerbated by the pandemic, the shares of Black and Latino adults reporting their households aren’t getting enough to eat are more than DOUBLE the share of white adults reporting this. /3

Thread: Yesterday’s announcements by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) & Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) might be welcome news for some homeowners, but it changes little for renters.

Here’s why 👇👇
These actions stop renter evictions only for the very small share of renters that may be living in single-family homes owned by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac as a result of foreclosure.
Millions of other renters are behind on rent, & 8 million kids live in these homes. There is only one way to provide them with real help: a robust, bipartisan, #COVIDRelief bill that provides rental assistance & protects people from eviction.
