When you give a news intervw, there is never time to say all you have thought of. I had just enough time to scribble notes for my @BBCNews interview w/ @katesilverton on #COVID_19uk anxiety. Here’s what they looked like. Here’s a brief thread on what I didn’t hv time to say.
2. The key problem is everybody is scared. Terrified. Not just of catching #Covid , but of dying, of uncertainty, of losing yr job, firing yr staff, feeding yr kids, not seeing your parents. Fear is rampant. The solution is to REDUCE ANXIETY. Help people know how to. Model it.
3. I think the @UKgovcomms should have a behavioural scientist at every daily #Covid briefing telling people how to reduce anxiety, how to generate emotional calm & safety, how to spread it. Right now, the briefings boost fear. The comfort is as key as the scary info.

I made a simple model of #COVID19 spread, with explanation, to show how even simple maths can capture the essence of the challenge.

github.com/TomNicholas/co…

It can reproduce the trends that make the headlines, including that:

1) If unchecked the virus will spread exponentially Image
2) In the worst-case scenarios, the #COVID_19uk death toll in the could be in the hundreds of thousands,
3) The peak load on the healthcare system might not be reached for 2-3 months,

I know it’s apt and amusing that Camus’ *The Plague* is selling well in these interesting times, but may I also recommend Simone de Beauvoir’s *Old Age*?

In it, Beauvoir described the hypocrisy of societies that claimed to value ‘human’ life. 1/
If the economy is founded upon profit, she said, “the entire civilization is ruled by profit. The human working stock is of interest only insofar as it is profitable. When it is no longer profitable it is tossed aside” (OA 13). 2/
In such societies, the reality beneath the rhetoric is that the value of a human being has an expiration date and the old are past it. ”It is not mere chance that makes families speak of a child who is ‘extraordinary for his age’ and also of an old man 3/

THREAD: There is an emergent left programme on #COVID_19uk - the obvious elements are: 1/ Universal Sick Pay and/or immediate helicopter payments to sustain demand and facilitate taking sick leave...
2/ Workers rights to safe working conditions, including for NHS/Social Care staff; 3/ Massive fiscal stimulus with redistribution at its core...
4/ Massive state-directed emergency investment in testing, intensive care beds and social care; and state-directed/globally co-ordinated vaccine research programme aimed at massive generic roll-out...

There's still a lot of misunderstanding about HMG response to #COVID_19uk. I'm no epidemiologist, but I *am* an expert at explaining biological ideas to people, so here is an explainer thread of the situation. Corrections / questions welcome. 1/n
First up - vaccines and immunity.

A vaccine is a medicine which helps you become immune to a particular disease without making you ill. Your immune system responds to the weakened version of the disease (the vaccine), thus building immunity to the real disease. 2/n
A vaccine 'trains' your immune system to fight the real disease should you encounter it. Think of it like Neo learning Kung Fu in The Matrix - he developed all the moves without ever facing a real opponent. So when he eventually has to fight, he kicks Agent Smith's arse. 3/n

Frightening front page: we've gone swiftly from "take it on the chin, no cruises" to "death industry overwhelmed", lack of "body storage", powers for police + immigration officials to detain people who *might* be infected, yet testing remains slow + patchy
#Covid19 /1
Powers for *police + immigration officials* to detain people suspected of having the virus yet we aren't investing in a proper testing regime. Risks of reinforcing bigotry and inciting further racist violence, while scientists tell us we need the data to inform responses /2
Relationships between how our government, media, and our own employers treat expertise are worth examining closely in the #Covid19 media context...
Which science? Which data? Which analysis?
How long and for whom do they wait before ceasing attempts to "agile" game a pandemic /3

Yesterday we entered the Delay phase of our #COVID_19uk Action Plan. @UKScienceChief explained why this is important.

It allows us to #FlattenTheCurve, which means reducing the impact in the short-term to ensure our health & care system can effectively protect vulnerable people
Anybody that has a new continuous cough or a high temperature should stay at home for seven days.

Here’s why 👇
Schools will remain open for now.

The effect of closing schools is somewhat limited for this disease.

Closing schools may also have the effect of children going to stay with grandparents at a time when older people might be most vulnerable.

THREAD: I believe Boris Johnson's strategy on #COVID_19uk is fundamentally flawed & at odds with available scientific data. I'm NOT an epidemiologist, but I am a complex systems analyst specialising in societal collapse risks. This is why I'm concerned /1 medium.com/insurge-intell…
People should NOT panic, but they should take as much precautionary mutual-collective action as possible to avert a potential worst-case scenario. The govt's failure to facilitate this will be disastrous - in my opinion. This is why I hold that opinion /2 medium.com/insurge-intell…
The govt claims that early large-scale action is unnecessary and could be counterproductive. Yet numerous epidemiological studies show that early social distancing intervention is the best way to reduce and limit deaths and the epidemic size /3 medium.com/insurge-intell…
