9 years of disaster. There are so many instances, that it would be tough to pick just 9.
Here's my list.
1. #Demonetisation. That one stroke of stupidity that literally broke the nation's back. ImageImageImage
#NaakamiKe9Saal
2. #Pulwama
Still remains a mystery, how a vehicle loaded with explosives could move around, undetected, in J&k, one of the most militarised regions in the world. What was more shameful than this was how BJP used this tragedy for electoral gains.

3. #JammuAndKashmir
Art. 370 was abrogated. J&K stopped being a state. Was carved out into 2 UTs. With the objectives of bringing peace & development to the region. Result? We've ended with 2 UTs with seething discontent below the surface.

About a year ago we had the 1st #covidlockdown in Germany

I'm the stay-home homeschooling dad - my wife is a medical doctor

But I could work @ night which I do often anyway

I did measure the night sky brightness and found it had decreased compared to before lockdown (1/12)
so in March 2017 it was less bright than in 2020 (see figure for zenith brightness)

this is surprising because we would expect light emission and #lightpollution to increase like shown in the paper we co-authored with @skyglowberlin and others

advances.sciencemag.org/content/3/11/e…

(2/12)
using night-time light satellite time series data (VIIRS DNB) we saw an increase in most major towns along the route we measured

you can check such data with @skyglowberlin tool:

lighttrends.lightpollutionmap.info

this was what we eexpected (3/12)

A new study has suggested that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted the mental health of young people, and increased levels of clinical depression were identified among them. The study was published in the journal named 'Psychiatry Research'.
The researchers from the University of Surrey surveyed 259 young people pre-pandemic in autumn 2019 and in the middle of initial lockdown measures in May or June 2020, on their levels of depression, anxiety, wellbeing, alcohol use, and sleep quality.
After conducting the survey, the researchers found out that there was a substantial impact on the mental health of these young adults due to the pandemic.

What should government do about the food crisis?

Give more money to the poor.

Using the Child Support Grant database: this will reach 65% of people who depend on informal jobs, whereas the Old Age Pension only reaches 25%.

#TopUpTheCSG by R500.

Cost: R6.2 billion a month Image
@ihsaanbassier provided that graph. Thanks, Ihsaan! Also read his & others' compelling argument that #TopUpTheCSG is the best response to the food crisis during the #CovidLockdown:

#TopUpTheGrants

theconversation.com/south-africa-c…
Increasing the Child Support Grant by R500 per month for 6 months is the quickest, easiest and safest way to transfer R40bn to poor households, who can use the cash to buy food and other essentials. Cash transfers also help to stimulate local economies and the informal sector.
