Christmas's apocalyptic airline meltdown stranded thousands, ruining vacations and costing fliers a fortune. It wasn't just #SouthwestAirlines' meltdown - as stranded fliers sought alternatives, airlines like #AA raised the price of some domestic coach tickets over $10K. 1/ A vector drawing of a man slumped at a desk with his face on

This didn't come out of nowhere. Southwest's growth strategy has seen the airlines add more planes and routes without a comparable investment in back-end systems, including crew scheduling systems. 3/

Remember my @DemocracyNow report on that gutsy little non-profit bank that took on Goldman Sachs? The Lower East Side People's Federal Credit Union (@LESPeoplesFCU) is owned by its customers, including Occupy Wall Street, 80% low-income Hispanics... gregpalast.com/goldman-sachs-…
You can help them out, stick it to Goldman, and put cash in your pocket by applying for a Payroll Protection Program (PPP) loan this week through them. lespeoples.org/small-business…

Biden’s new #COVIDRelief bill allows gig workers like me to get a loan equal to about 21% of your annual REVENUE shown on your Schedule C. It’s a loan you don’t have to pay back! (Thanks Joe!) And the Credit Union gets a fee for each loan. Help yourself—and fund the revolution!

🚨BREAKING: The Senate passed the $1.9 trillion #AmericanRescuePlan, providing necessary relief to our communities—including 2.2 mil. more people in mixed-status families. Though we celebrate this victory, the bill once again unfairly excludes 9.3 mil. immigrants from relief. 1/
Rejecting @SenTedCruz’s effort to block stimulus checks for undocu immigrants is a big win for immigrant communities. 2.2 million additional families will now be included in relief.

This is the result of advocates who organized to ensure inclusion of ALL of our communities. 2/
We’ve said it before, but we’ll say it again: There is no COVID recovery without immigrants. EVERYONE, including immigrants, must have access to COVID relief, testing & vaccines. 3/

Although the $1.9 trillion COVID relief bill under consideration addresses some key needs, some pieces could be better targeted. A redesigned plan could still provide the support necessary to fight the virus and support a strong economic recovery.
The House #COVIDrelief package includes about $312B of policies developed long before the #COVID crisis, not in response to it. Many of these policies are worthwhile but should be paid for and made permanent parts of the tax code or budget.
Policymakers could offset these policies by raising the top individual income tax rate for high earners back to 39.6% or increasing the corporate income tax rate.

The #COVIDRelief bill making its way through House committees this week includes vital provisions that would make comprehensive coverage more affordable and accessible for millions of people. More in this new @CenteronBudget paper: cbpp.org/research/healt… 1/5
Under the proposal, people with income below 150 percent of the poverty line (about $19,000 for a single person and $39,000 for a family of four) would pay no premiums for a benchmark plan, after accounting for premium tax credits. 2/5
Other folks would see big premium drops. A single individual making $30,000 would pay $85 rather than $195 per month in premiums for a benchmark plan with reduced deductibles and other cost-sharing. A family of four making $50,000 would pay $67 per month rather than $252. 3/5

The jobs report released last week showed that 140,000 jobs were lost in December. The latest #CovidRelief bill doesn't provide enough relief. The larger risk for the nation isn't providing enough economic stimulus & hardship relief.

A thread. cbpp.org/research/econo…
People of color, who have experienced disproportionate hardship in the pandemic & recession, & who historically have waited longest to see the fruits of an economic recovery, are also the most at-risk right now.

cbpp.org/research/econo…
Private & government payrolls combined fell by 140,000 jobs, which is larger in percentage than the deficit in the worst month of the Great Recession (6.3%). Long-term unemployment of 27 weeks+ again rose sharply, & racial disparities in employment outcomes remained wide.

Thread: today, new data from the Census Pulse show that millions of Americans are still struggling to afford food and rent. This economic crisis is far from over for many, and policymakers need to do more to make sure families can put food on the table. /1 #COVIDRelief
Census data from September 2-14 show that about 10% of all adults reported their household sometimes or often didn’t have enough to eat in the last 7 days, more than twice the share of adults who reported this at any point in 2019 (3.7%). /2
Because of longstanding inequities exacerbated by the pandemic, the shares of Black and Latino adults reporting their households aren’t getting enough to eat are more than DOUBLE the share of white adults reporting this. /3

Thread: Yesterday’s announcements by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) & Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) might be welcome news for some homeowners, but it changes little for renters.

Here’s why 👇👇
These actions stop renter evictions only for the very small share of renters that may be living in single-family homes owned by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac as a result of foreclosure.
Millions of other renters are behind on rent, & 8 million kids live in these homes. There is only one way to provide them with real help: a robust, bipartisan, #COVIDRelief bill that provides rental assistance & protects people from eviction.

Thread: HUD is reportedly preparing to extend a moratorium that protects some homeowners (those with Federal #Housing Admin. mortgages) from foreclosures through the end of the year.

Here's why that's not nearly enough to address the ongoing crisis.

politico.com/news/2020/08/1…
This limited relief appears to do little or nothing to protect the large number of renters struggling to keep a roof over their heads. That’s because the measure only applies to mortgage lenders who have no say in evictions outside of very limited (& infrequent) situations.
This comes as 21% of all renters were behind on their rent in July with Black & Hispanic renters facing substantially higher housing hardships than white renters. Image

Thread: The #unemployment rate is very high & millions report that their households did not get enough to eat or that they are behind in paying the rent.

We are tracking this hardship in our new special series. #RentReliefNow #BoostSNAPNow

cbpp.org/research/pover… Image
What we know. People are:

🍎 Having difficulty getting enough food
🏠 Unable to pay rent or mortgage
🏭 Unemployment is high
🧒 There are millions of kids facing hardship
📈 And overall hardship is trending upward

cbpp.org/research/pover…
🍎 About 29M adults — 12.1% of all adults — reported that their household sometimes or often didn’t have enough to eat in the last 7 days. That translates to an estimated 9-17M kids who live in a family in which the kids were not eating enough because the they couldn’t afford it. ImageImage

Despite Trump’s claims, his EO doesn't extend the federal ban on evictions or provide more funds to tenants to cover lost rent payments. #RentReliefNow

In fact, it doesn’t do anything that immediately helps people pay their rent & avoid evictions.

cbpp.org/blog/trump-exe…
However, Trump Admin officials are recklessly claiming that renters are now protected from evictions.

That must be particularly concerning for the likely millions of people struggling to pay rent in August. #RentReliefNow

The nation faces serious rental #housing problems that this executive order doesn’t solve.

Instead, policymakers should take a comprehensive approach to address them adequately in the next #COVIDRelief bill. #RentReliefNow

NEW: The President’s new executive actions should deeply concern all Americans.

To help a nation suffering through one of its gravest crises in many decades, the White House should withdraw the executive actions.

cbpp.org/press/statemen… Image
The executive actions fall dramatically short of responding effectively to the enormous need across the country due to #COVID19 & the deep recession.

That we have reached this point is a national tragedy.
By bypassing Congress on major budget & tax decisions & trying to override federal laws on the use of federal funds, they weaken our democracy by shredding longstanding norms of governance & potentially violating the Constitution.

Trump’s expected executive order to extend the #CARESAct’s federal ban on evictions very likely will prove woefully inadequate to help people experiencing #homelessness or the millions of renters struggling to pay rent. #RentReliefNow

cbpp.org/blog/trump-exe… Image
Eviction moratoriums alone do not help renters pay the bills. Renters continue to accumulate rent debt & struggle to pay for utilities, food, & other necessities. #RentReliefNow

Policymakers must maintain robust, expanded #unemployment assistance until the economy has recovered substantially from the current recession.

Here's a quick thread why they need to #ExtendUI

cbpp.org/research/econo… ImageImageImage
Extending & expanding #unemployment would relieve hardship that falls disproportionately on workers of color, reduce racial & ethnic disparities in unemployment & other labor market outcomes, & speed the economic recovery. #ExtendUI #FundtheFrontLines

Policymakers must ensure that the recovery from the #COVID19 recession is robust & broad based to prevent a devastating setback to the employment gains Black & Hispanic workers made in the low-unemployment years of the 2009-20 expansion. #ExtendUI ImageImage

Thread: Once again, the integrity of the #2020Census is under attack, as the Trump administration seeks to rush the count during a pandemic and suppress the count of immigrants.

nytimes.com/2020/07/22/sun…
@talmonsmith Unfortunately, it's not just the #unemployment benefits that are expiring, but the eviction moratorium too. Millions of people are currently behind on rent, & could face #homelessness during a global pandemic.

Another #GreatReads from @bencasselman: nytimes.com/2020/07/21/bus…
@talmonsmith @bencasselman “When [people] can’t pay their rent, now it’s the landlord whose business is hurting. Those are all dollars that are not circulating through the economy.”

***Important Information***

There are a few groups we have been following since the Covid19 virus went global. These groups have jumped into action and have selflessly helped others simply because they see others in need of help.
On Facebook there’s a group of pages that are working together to help all of Calgary. The pages are: The Country Hills Cares, Coventry Hills Cares, and The Harvest Hills Cares. They are based in NE/NW Calgary but will assist any Calgarian in need during these difficult times.
They are in desperate need of donations because they most recently helped 11 families from the local Cargill Meat Plant as well as 17 other families from local businesses that had to shut down and temporarily close due to a positive result of Covid19
