As we celebrate the end of this difficult year and welcome 2021, I’d like to take an opportunity to review the past year in our 35th Ward. Thread🧵👇🏽
We started this year by passing our 606 demolition moratorium, which has helped preserve our built environment, promote environmentally sustainable building practices, and protect affordable two- and three-flat apartment buildings near the 606 trail. chicago.curbed.com/2020/1/7/21054…
In January, we also amended Chicago’s sanctuary city ordinance to require our police department to report any requests they receive from ICE. This was a major step forward for accountability, transparency, and immigrant protections. news.wttw.com/2020/01/15/cit…

Alright, I know I’ve said this is important, but folks don’t seem to understand how truly significant this grand juror case is for accountability in policing...THREAD. 1/
Grand juries, though not used in all cases, are where a prosecutor presents the evidence they have regarding a crime, then asks a panel of jurors whether the evidence is sufficient to pursue a formal case against the defendant. 2/
Neither the defendant, nor their counsel, generally have the right to object or even be present at most of these, and most often they’re sealed, so the conduct and activities of the prosecutor and the evidence they present is not in view of the public or the defendant. 3/

What is #CPACNow?
How will it enable us to #DefundThePolice?
What else will CPAC empower us to do?
A thread on how exactly CPAC will overturn the power dynamic between police and our communities. Image
The #CPACNow ordinance was first written in 2012 after the police murder of Rekia Boyd. It would establish community control of the police, a goal first fought for by the Black Panther Party, by putting elected community members in charge of decisions around policing. Image
The word "community" is important here. The communities who need to be empowered are the ones most harmed by police violence, so #CPACNow council members will need at least 2 years of experience organizing in oppressed and marginalized communities. Image

I wanna explain a couple things about the principles behind #CPACNow cause a lot of people are finding out about it for the first time and I've seen a few misconceptions on here.
The main one is that #CPACNow is an alternative to abolishing or defunding the police. It's not in opposition to those demands, which is why pretty much every abolitionist org in Chicago supports CPAC. It's a strategy on the road to a world without police.
What we don't want is for the city to cut the police budget only to raise it again when there's an ebb in the movement, or to dismantle the police department and then pay some private company to do what cops currently do. That's why we need community control over the police.

From Frank Chapman: "Listening to some of our people who call themselves leaders admonishing us about violence and going along with reactionaries and public officials calling the people in Minneapolis rioters fills me with anger and disgust."
"Whenever the oppressed rise up they are always told you are hurting no one but yourself. "I understand your anger but this is your neighborhood you are burning down," they say. Really?!
You mean these are my slums, my roach infested houses, that I am forced to live in. "
"You mean these are my police stations that function like military outposts where daily racist assaults are staged against us. Protesting against these oppressive conditions and killer cops is a democratic right."

We are meeting at Daley Plaza to draw attention to the recent ruling by Judge Hennelly in Gerald Reed's case. #FreeGeraldReed #FreeThemAll #CPACNOW Image
Why is the ruling so important? Judge Hennelly's ruling has the potential to influence the way the Circuit Court of Cook County rules on future police torture cases still working their way through the legal system especially two current police torture cases on his docket. Image

NEWS MEDIA ADVISORY- Press conference by the #CAARPR to demand the City Council enact the ordinance for an elected (#CPACnow). Wed. Sept. 18th at 9 AM, Chicago City Hall, 2nd Floor. @ChipMitchell1 @natalieymoore @ABC7Chicago @wttw @cbschicago
Why- Mayor Lightfoot has spoken on police accountability: she refuses to undertake the systemic change Chicago needs to address police crimes and impunity. Her police "reform" bill proposes that the broken accountability system remain intact and ...completely
in her hands. Yet, since 2012, communities across Chicago have been demanding democratic control of the police. We call on the 13 alderpersons sponsors, 60k who endorse CPAC. Demand City Council to enact the people's inalienable democratic right to determine who polices us + how

Our supporters have been calling the 13 CPAC aldermen for nearly a week. We've been flooding the phones and our efforts are working.
Mayor Lightfoot is using GAPA to stop our movement for #CPACNow and that's not happening without a fight.

Let's be clear: she isn't supporting GAPA as a pathway to CPAC, she's supporting GAPA as the solution to policy tyranny.

A thread: In my four years on the Chicago City Council I’ve faced anti-immigrant, anti-Latinx, and homophobic harassment from some of my colleagues.
Until now I’ve remained quiet about the harassment I’ve received because it’s not about me, it’s about us, and I've felt there are much bigger systemic issues that require our energy and attention.
I also know that much of the ire I’ve received is a direct result of my progressive stances & my siding with our grassroots social movements, whether it be #NoCopAcademy, #CPACNow, #EraseTheDatabase, & that the youth at the frontlines of these movements have received much worse.
