At the @CAPSACSP panel on post-docs w/ @Joe_S_Sparling @BerubeDo Rachel Fernandez, @krishnahegde3 @DrHaverfield #CSPC2018
#CSPC2018 @Joe_S_Sparling @CAPSACSP says you lose money for every year you train as a postdoc (on average). PhDs that go straight to the workforce are often more financially stable. Post-docs lose retirement income, forego wages (esp now they pay tax) despite high #talent
Due to unionization and internal funding, there are now more post-docs with employee status. This palliates some of those issues, but externally funded and govt post-docs are still behind esp since they are not employees, no benefits despite taxation - @Joe_S_Sparling #CSPC2018

... Also thanks the #scipol community for being there and answering the call when they were needed.

Getting the @ChiefSciCan office together was a challenge like for #ECR just starting up a lab, and like #cdnsci she has build an excellent team

#CSPC2018 panel on #scienceadvice starts!

@DLEKirkwood chief scientist of @NRCan says issue is not do much making sure science is valued in govt (seems it is) but to ensure evidence is used in policy. Plus, policy is inherently quicker than science.

#scipol #canpoli #cdnsci
... The challenge for new science advisors and chief scientists is to ensure that the need for #EBDM in policy is understood across the department, across govt. #CSPC2018

We really put the FUN in dysfunctional - Canada is a relatively small country on a population standpoint, but we are ever smaller if we are divided across provinces - @cdavidnaylor #CSPC2018
+ the majority of dollars in HERD come from universities, not federal. To note, provinces don't contribute much either, though QuΓ©bec has been a model to follow.
Canada doesn't collaborate well across provincial borders, they work much more with international partners. We have a chance to knit #cdnsci closer together and make our science more national ➑️ we have a chance to realign
