I’ve been focusing on #Pakistan and #CPEC recently, but wanted to tell you all about this article on #India that @WilfriedSwenden and I published recently. In it we assess Lijphart’s claim that India should be coded as consociational 1/n. rdcu.be/b0eGR/n
Wilfried and I aren't the first ones to do this but we use new data, some from @TCPD_Ashoka to assess power sharing in #India in relation to #religion #caste, #territory and #language 2/n
In relation to the Union #Cabinet we find that #Muslims are under-represented according to their proportion of the population and that this is getting worse 3/n #India Deviation from proportionality in Indian cabinet based on religion 1947-2018

Existing eight Group A services of the Railways will be reorganised into a Central Service called Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS)
Unification of services will end 'departmentalism', promote smooth working of Railways, expedite decision making, create a coherent vision for organisation and promote rational decision making

Some people have asked for our comment on the #Treasury #EconomicStrategy document
There are two major issues: process and content.
I deal with these in turn.Note: these are not the official views of the @IEJ_SA 👇
Firstly on *process*
National Treasury has gone rogue...again
They have unilaterally published a policy document without engaging
👉government structures
👉ANC structures or
👉civil society (unless you count financial sector economists present at their colloquia).
Given that we are in a deep economic crisis, this Treasury unilateralism is highly irresponsible, as broad engagement on the *nature of the problem* is critical to coming up with *appropriate solutions*. But it now emerges that such engagement was totally absent.

"I really respect what she's done in terms of recognising the error of the approach that she set out and putting in place something to potentially rectify that." @ManduReid on @BBCNews discussing the diversity of @CarolineLucas's all-female #cabinet proposal
"We are facing a national emergency. We need different approaches, we need to break the deadlock, we need to change the perspectives that get in the room & get air time. & actually, bringing women around the table would be a completely different dynamic to the macho war cabinet."
"[Boris Johnson's war cabinet] have taken us to the precipice of no-deal, which will hurt women and that is reason enough alone for women to be involved in the decision making that actually helps us get through this as a country."

First some qualifications. I am first and foremost a financial economist, and by nature and study, fiscally conservative. Most finance academics are.

I care deeply about fiscal and monetary policy, but not obtuse enough to believe my opinion is always right
3/

What makes the country great is our ability to disagree passionately about a wide array of subjects but find a working common ground.

I try to refrain from many political topics, especially on this platform, because, what can be accomplished debating on @Twitter
