PEOPLE OF SPACE! I’m super excited to be hosting this week! We’ll be covering a bunch of topics that are near and dear to me including #space (obviously), astronomy, supernovae, radio astronomy, science communication, and MORE

But who is this random dude yelling at us about space?
Well the short version is that I’m a physicist who finished high school with every intention of becoming a lawyer - pictured is 19yo me not caring about science
#accidentalscientist #accidentalphysicist #throwback #SPACE 10 years ago before I had considered a career in science - I
For a slightly longer version you can check out this #thread I did on my @funfactscience account recently to reintroduce myself to #spacefam and any newcomers to my page

@ATMNE_math panel discussions happening now! Being recorded for those who can't attend live.
Thanks @atomic_math!
Looking forward to panel on "Math 4 All" with @carloliwitter @mslailanur & Michelle McKnight
#MTBoS #iTeachMath
Michelle: Math 4 All means all Ss see themselves as math do-ers & thinkers & communicators. No obstacles are being set up by us, so all Ss see themselves as "math people"
@mslailanur : Meet all Ss where they are
@mslailanur @carloliwitter Everyone should have the access to all the math, so everyone can have the opportunities & options.
Reminded of Bob Moses, radical equations.

As I am growing older, I have started enjoying reading and appreciating certain aspects of the pessimistic philosophy of #Schopenhauer.
One has to read at least these philosophers to develop a broader understanding of society, logic and methods of enquiry->
1. Hume
2. Descartes
3. Hegel
4. Marx
5. Schopenhauer
6. Kant
7. Wittgenstein
8. Berkeley
9. Isaiah Berlin
10. AJ Ayer
11. Anthony Kenny
12. Nietzsche
Of course, the list above is expandable.
I cannot write the names of all philosophers, logicians, and methodologists in one tweet.
Yes, Anthony Quinton, P.F. Strawson, Quinne, David Donaldson and Amartya Sen (Philosophy of Economics) can be added to the suggested reading list.

What's your #calculus narrative? Do you have a one-sentence summary you can repeat to students throughout the course so that they absorb the main idea?

I was inspired by the attached thread to share my current best answer... In the first quadrant of th...
My answer:

"Calculus makes hard problems easy with (1) approximations, (2) limits, and (3) shortcuts:

(1) approximate curvy shapes w/ straight shapes,
(2) find a limit by infinite refinement,
(3) apply general results to bypass limit calculation."
In tutoring, I call these the core principles of calculus. These get to the heart of the subject, but...

What do we get if we take the unit circle x² + y² = 1 and complexify it? We get the 3D object (manifold) in 4D space given by the equation
z² + w² = 1
where z, w are complex numbers. Here's one way to see its #geometry. (A slowmo animation to follow.) #calculus
Here is a slow animation of how circles of various radii (centered at the origin) are transformed by the complexified circle function. #math #geometry #calculus
N.B., the reason we see two disconnected loops for the image of circles of small radii is one loop corresponds to the + and other to the - choices in the function u(r,θ). (And, yes, the function w is analytic.)

Would it be asking too much of the state or national govt to declare Madhava's (1340-1425) house as a heritage site of greatest importance to Indian Knowledge Systems and build a museum to showcase contributions to Science & Tech? #calculus

newindianexpress.com/states/kerala/…
2/ Madhava's discoveries of infinite series, links to geometry, trig, algebra & functional approx laid foundations of calculus. 200 years later, aided by church transmissions, European mathematicians ramped up, with Newton proposing "fluxions" later becoming what we call calculus
3/
One can well imagine the Acharya teaching his shishyas outside this house. Thanks to lost works and untranslated material, we are yet to discover the full extent of their discoveries.

Pic shows Madhava's ingenious infinite series that converges in the limit exactly to pi. Image

I started playing #guitar in college. Some of my friends back home played, so I thought I'd learn. It's been years since I kept up with it. With no job and an empty house, I had time. Plus, I could crank up my amp. Ava would have hated it. All the more reason to do it.
#vss365
Strumming a few chords or playing a riff through a loud amp usually makes me feel better. It's more of a distraction this time. My amp is a little old. Even a #ragpicker might pass on it. "If you're not going to play it, sell it," Ava nagged. Life always got in the way.

Or I got in the way. Not even ten years ago I kept getting sick all the time. Painful stomach cramps would radiate weakness throughout my body. I learned how to wash it away like healing #rainwater. That's when I really started to figure out who I was and what I could do.
