This fascist “movement” has hijacked our flag, hijacked #CanadaDay2022, trampled the FREEDOMS of others to enjoy 🇨🇦 Day at the nation’s capital. Hijacked peace & normal life of Ottawa residents & cost businesses. Fuck these Brownshirts & all who enable them. #cdnpoli #ottnews
Many Trump/#January6th supporters, have come as tourists to participate in this op. Right wing circles have exchanged plans to camp at KOA grounds all summer in an attempt to sabotage & disrupt 🇨🇦’s democratically elected gov’t with the full seditious participation of #CPC.

freecanada .win is a Canadian forum styled like 4/8chan. The content posted is similar alt-right extremist rhetoric. Posted by Canadians. Registered (host: XenForo) in 2019, the vile platform used by many #Freedumbconvoy supporters/participants is relatively unknown #OttawaConvoy
I've shared posts by freecanada .win users-#HornyHonkies threads- showcasing the misogynistic, sexist & patriarchal ideologies held by these #freedomfakers. I'm always disgusted by what I read, but right now (Pride Month, Indigenous Month, Roe v Wade, Canada Day) it's nuts
#OttawaConvoy & #freedomfaker posts regarding #Indigenous peoples make me sick. The snippets are particularly offensive. Being patriotic doesn't mean ignoring your nation's history-good or bad. Based on what I've witnessed, a vast majority of this 'movement' are bigots #FreeDumb ImageImage

A Tale of Two Coups: A thread about the diverging performance of democratic institutions in response to recent coup attempts in Canada and the USA. #KlondikePapers #January6thHearings #FreedomConvoy #cdnpoli #CanadaDay #EmergencyAct
TL;DR: The US is outpacing Canada in responding to foreign attacks on its democracy by communicating intelligence with its population.
1/62 The past month has been a study in contrasts as the proverbial chickens come home to roost for both the Canadian “Crypto Convoy” and January 6 coup attempts of the past two winters.

2022 Canada Day Public Safety Planning:

We are working with #CanadaDay organizers and our policing partners to implement a public safety plan that allows all Canadians and visitors to freely and safely enjoy the capital during this celebration. #ottawa #ottnews
The expectation is that this Heritage Canada event will be larger than usual both in terms of crowd size and the footprint of the event.

We are also expecting several large events throughout the Ottawa area to celebrate the day.
These factors, combined with an increased level of protests and demonstrations, are guiding our planning. There will be significant road closures and a major increase in police presence. We will be bringing multiple extra policing resources from several services.

Is it possible to live #carfree in Edmonton's suburbs with 4 kids?

I think it is, and after selling our vehicle yesterday, today is day 1 of our new life.

I'm going to 🧵 our journey here.

All 4 fit in our cargo trike, but I'm going to add a trailer for more space/cargo.

1/ Image
Timing for this is ideal bc we got an offer we couldn't refuse for our van, which gives us the $ to create the optimum set up for #carfree life.

Plus, we will save $ not having a car (I'm cheap). CAA's calculator estimates $12k a year.

2/ Image
I've been thinking about this for a couple years, but having our 4th & realizing we don't need the van for him, plus insurance rising $900 this year despite having a clean record & being -15 on the grid, plus rising fuel costs told me this was the time.

Today is #CanadaDay and for many of us it is a day to reflect and mourn, to honour the survivors of the horrifying residential school system and remember the thousands of young Indigenous children who lost their lives due to neglect and abuse.
What else can we do? (short thread)
1/ Talk to our kids about it. Here's some suggestions. todaysparent.com/family/books/b…
2/ Raise awareness. That's what the #WearOrange movement is all about. onwa.ca/post/orange-sh…

#CanadaDay today needs to be a day of reflection and thoughtfulness.

I’ve put together a short thread of resources so Canadians can learn more about Indigenous People’s, Residential Schools, Indigenous rights, and some of the many success stories of our people.

📣Please share📣
First, all Canadians should take the time to read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Final Report. You can read that here: nctr.ca/records/report… #CanadaDay
The work of the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls Inquiry did good work and produced 231 Calls to Justice. Read that report here: mmiwg-ffada.ca/final-report/ #CanadaDay

I am thinking of our history on #CanadaDay.

I think of my granny’s words.

She talked about the Potlatch—our system of government—about how our people maintained it even after it was outlawed through the federal Indian Act. … (1/5🧵)
She talked about how our people disguised the Potlatch from Indian agents. They had lookouts and when the signal came that the Indian agent was close, those assembled would start singing ‘Onward Christian Soldiers’ to trick the agent into thinking they were “good little Indians.”
There are so many stories like granny's, and so many more stories that will never be told. #215+🧡

This is part of who we are as Canadians.

Yet… We are changing. Today, Canadians know more of what it took to bring us here. And they know more of the actions we must now take.

#DailyUnheardAlbum 2021 day 1: The KLF - "Solid State Logik 1". OK, not REALLY "unheard" as it's a collection of singles from back in the day. I'm just so happy some KLF tunes are FINALLY available in the digital music world. Going into '21 like it's '91! open.spotify.com/album/1kJY7mRP… Image
#DailyUnheardAlbum 2021 day 2: Actress - "Karma & Desire". Since the early weeks of Jan are pretty bereft of new releases, it's a good time to troll the Best Of lists from the just-ended year, check out stuff you missed, and regret not hearing it sooner. open.spotify.com/album/5tDW2Im2… Image
#DailyUnheardAlbum 2021 day 3: R.A.P. Ferreira - "bob's son". Laid-back, jazzy & poetic hip-hop that pays tribute to early beat poet Bob Kaufman. I wasn't familiar with Kaufman before, but this record provides great incentive to check out his work. open.spotify.com/album/5lVgjLzg… Image

🇨🇦 Happy #CanadaDay! 🇨🇦

Canada’s new trade deal with the US and Mexico – the new NAFTA, ALENA USMCA, T-MEC – entered into force today, replacing the 25-year old NAFTA.

But the trade angles to Canada’s national day go back much, much further: (thread)

In 1846, the UK repealed the Corn Laws, protective tariffs on imported grain. Good for British factory workers struggling to afford bread. Bad for grain exporters in Upper Canada, whose newish preferential access to UK markets was eroded away. thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/can…

What did Canadian business interests do? They looked south. In 1854, the UK & the US struck the Elgin-Marcy treaty, cutting duties on food & raw materials between the US and the Province of Canada (Ont/Que), New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI & Nfld.

Happy Canada Day!
I struggled with what to write this year more than most.

2020 has been a strange and difficult year. We are in the midst of a world-wide pandemic. On top of this, the frustration over injustices, bubbling for centuries has boiled over into protest and unrest. Image
This has compounded feelings of disconnect and division for many. It's been a challenging year.

This may seem like a real downer way to present a #CanadaDay note but please read on.

#CanadaDay2020
"Celebrate our present. Embrace our future. Honour our past."

This is a theme I developed a few years ago when thinking about Ladysmith (and by extension Cowichan, BC and Canada). I feel like it speaks to what Canada means to me, especially at this critical time in history.

Since it's #CanadaDay, I'm drinking Carling Black Label, South Africa's most popular beer and a beer that originated in Canada. So how did a relatively obscure Canadian beer become South Africa's bestseller? It's a story about soccer, advertising and international trade...
If you don't live in Quebec and don't buy the cheapest beers, there's a good chance you've never seen Black Label in Canada (I understand that in many parts of the country, only Black Label Ice, "a strong, low-priced ice beer" is available)
But at one point, the Carling Brewery was a major player. In 1927, the brewery offered a $25,000 prize to the first person to fly from London, Ontario to London, England. The first attempt, in a plane named Sir John Carling, ended with a crash somewhere in the North Atlantic

Happy Canada Day!

Thanks to everyone doing their part to make our country a fairer and more just one, one that lives up to the ideals we celebrate on #CanadaDay.

Thanks first to the countless volunteers who have stepped up during this pandemic to help one another out.

This #CanadaDay thanks too to all those fighting for the right to housing, defending our environment & working hard to see our institutions free of anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism.

It can be hard to see sometimes, but a better country isn’t only possible – it is necessary and more urgent than ever.

Thank you for everything you’re doing to help get us there.

There's a piece of #NovaScotia in Canada's parliament buildings! Lots of pieces, actually.
Read this for the story.

Canada's original parliament buildings were built from 1859-1866. Except for the Library of Parliament, they were destroyed in a 1916 fire. Reconstruction started that year and the new buildings were completed in 1927.

The parliament buildings could have ended up looking quite different. The original 1859 plan called for “native limestone” from Gloucester and Hull, which is somber grey, but the architects chose warmer, cream-coloured Nepean sandstone. Nepean is an area in Ottawa.

A very happy #CanadaDay to all our Canadian followers! July 1st marks the national day of Canada, with celebrations taking place across the country. 🇨🇦
#OTD 10 years ago, The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh attended #CanadaDay celebrations in Ottawa, celebrating the “extraordinary warmth and enthusiasm of the people of Canada”.

The Queen also said: “At home, Canadians have many reasons for optimism, even in trying times.”
Today, @CanadianUK will celebrate Canada’s 153rd birthday with #LoveFromCanada - a virtual show of Canada’s talented artists, rich culture & core values.
