Prime Minister of Canada DOES NOT BELIEVE this is the best country in the world (1:14):

"Because that's what makes Canada special. NOT THE BELIEF THAT THIS IS THE BEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD - the knowledge that we could be."

THEN PRAY TELL, if not #Canada - which country?

@JustinTrudeau had no difficulty once expressing unhesitatingly his "level of admiration ... for #China [#CCP]."

☞ I ASK, AGAIN ... Which country in the world do you believe is - in your estimation - the best country?

Happy Canada Day!
I struggled with what to write this year more than most.

2020 has been a strange and difficult year. We are in the midst of a world-wide pandemic. On top of this, the frustration over injustices, bubbling for centuries has boiled over into protest and unrest. Image
This has compounded feelings of disconnect and division for many. It's been a challenging year.

This may seem like a real downer way to present a #CanadaDay note but please read on.

"Celebrate our present. Embrace our future. Honour our past."

This is a theme I developed a few years ago when thinking about Ladysmith (and by extension Cowichan, BC and Canada). I feel like it speaks to what Canada means to me, especially at this critical time in history.

Happy Canada Day!

Thanks to everyone doing their part to make our country a fairer and more just one, one that lives up to the ideals we celebrate on #CanadaDay.

Thanks first to the countless volunteers who have stepped up during this pandemic to help one another out.

This #CanadaDay thanks too to all those fighting for the right to housing, defending our environment & working hard to see our institutions free of anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism.

It can be hard to see sometimes, but a better country isn’t only possible – it is necessary and more urgent than ever.

Thank you for everything you’re doing to help get us there.

There's a piece of #NovaScotia in Canada's parliament buildings! Lots of pieces, actually.
Read this for the story.

Canada's original parliament buildings were built from 1859-1866. Except for the Library of Parliament, they were destroyed in a 1916 fire. Reconstruction started that year and the new buildings were completed in 1927.

The parliament buildings could have ended up looking quite different. The original 1859 plan called for “native limestone” from Gloucester and Hull, which is somber grey, but the architects chose warmer, cream-coloured Nepean sandstone. Nepean is an area in Ottawa.

1/1: July 1st marks the anniversary of the British North America act of 1867 and the establishment of the Dominion of Canada. The signing of the act followed centuries of colonialism, oppression and genocide of Indigenous Peoples on these lands. (thread)
2/2: Colonialism and systemic racism in Canada are not just part of our past, but part of our present as well. There is a through line in our history connecting settlement to enslavement , head taxes, internment camps, immigration policies, and police brutality.
3/3: Colonialism and racism remain embedded in the legal, political, health, and economic context of Canada today. It is important for each of us to reflect , learn and acknowledge this history

How #Canada Saved My Life: A #CanadaDay2020 Story

When a country gives you a chance at life, you become willing to give your life for it.

Those of us whose parents migrated to Canada opened our eyes in a paradise and silver spoons in our mouths.
We would never know the horrors that they escaped, the harrowing sacrifices they made, the unspeakable corruption they endured, the invisible injuries that still haunt them.

My parents were coveted government criminals in Pakistan. Their persecution was state-sanctioned.
Their whole community was seen as a virus.

Their heinous crime?

They called themselves Muslims.

Because they believed that a prophet could come after Muhammad (sa) the corrupt clergy there declared killing Ahmadis like my parents a mandate.

Shops began to burn.

This upcoming Canada Day I would like to thank @realDonaldTrump for the gift of the new USMCA trade agreement that takes effect on the same day.

We should all be thankful particularly for the addition of Chapter 27 and its anti-corruption articles. 😉😉
