Earlier today, #EU agreed on a badly needed reform of the EU Emissions Trading System (#EUETS) which is the system of cap-and-trade of #carbonemissions allowances for #energyintensive industries and the #powergeneration sector. The most critical points are:
1. Agreement to make it compulsory for #EU members to dedicate all their auctioning revenues to #climateaction #investments
2. Sectors covered by the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (recently agreed #EU #carbon import tax) such as #cement, #aluminium, #fertilisers, #electricty production, #hydrogen, #iron and #steel, will see an end to free #allowances for these sectors between 2026 and 2034

Need a break from doomscrolling about the decline of American society? I wrote about the #ElectrifyEverything strategy for @citizensclimate today. My blog post on why and how to electrify, plus a thread šŸ§µdiscussing some additional nuances [1/5]:

Itā€™s critical to decarbonize the electricity sector ASAP because marginal demand increase is often supplied by fossil fuels. One recent study found that increased marginal electricity emissions would offset >half the reductions from deploying EVs [2/5]
pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnā€¦
That's because "underlying these trends is primarily a shift toward greater reliance on coal to satisfy marginal electricity use." So we need to phase out coal quickly, which a #carbonprice would accomplish, or other targeted policies like clean electricity standards [3/5]

.@EU_Commission proposed a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (#CBAM) as part of #Fitfor55. Aim: carbon leakage protection. Our Impulse shows how to tweak the proposal to create an effective CBAM & how #climateclubs & CBAM can work together to accelerate #industrytransition. 1/9 Our new impulse is out: Getting the Transition to CBAM Right
1ļøāƒ£ With higher EU climate targets, free allocation of CO2 allowances in the EU ETS is not a sustainable solution to solve #carbonleakage problem. #CBAM is the most credible alternative to free allocation. 2/9
2ļøāƒ£ With right objectives, #climateclubs can complement an EU #CBAM - climate clubs cannot replace EU carbon leakage tools as vast differences in climate ambition and policy are likely to prevail among potential climate club members, not to mention non-club members. 3/9

Hydrogen is one lever for #climateneutrality in areas which are challenging to electrify. But where does #H2 research stand currently & what new findings are available? With our new impulse "12 Insights on #Hydrogen" we shed light on the subject. šŸ§µ šŸ‘‡ 1/8 Image
Finding 1: By 2050, carbon-free #H2 provides 1/5 of world's final energy, mainly made from renewable electricity. H2 should first decarbonize industry, shipping, aviation + consolidate a #greenenergy system. H2 infrastructure should meet need of industry, ports & power grids. 2/8 Image
Finding 2: Financing #greenH2 in no-regret applications (industry, power, shipping, aviation) needs additional policy support since #carbonprice will remain insufficient over the next decade. No credible financing strategy for introducing green #H2 in #households. 3/8 Image

Here we are ! Finally, after 18 months of big talks and long-term objectives about #EUGreenDeal, @EU_Commission releases its mammoth package #FitFor55 #FF55.
Here is my key take-aways: the good, the bad, the ugly. #Thread šŸ‘‡
Good 1: thatā€™s a massive policy push to transform #EUGreenDeal promises into concrete actions to change our ways of life. @FransTimmermans recognises this will be ā€œbloody hardā€, but righly underlines that our future depends on it.
Good 2: Creation of the Social Climate Fund that we @DelorsInstitute have been calling for years. This Fund should start as of 2025 with EU budget, and could invest up to 70Bnā‚¬ from 2025 to 2032 to finance national plans to ensure social justice in the transition. #EnergyPoverty
