1/ The scientist in me is looking forward to this new, real world data emerging on #HealthConscious #Carnivores.

It will help provide data that helps confirm/disconfirm the long standing assumption that "healthy user bias" has been effectively adjusted for by researchers...
2/ If you're not familiar with "healthy user bias" (HUB), it's a known potential confounder where those who are doing what they feel is healthy in one regard (such as avoidance of red meat), can often have other likewise "healthy habits", such as more exercise, less smoking, etc
3/ This is a big problem with epidemiology given the overlap is quite common.

To mitigate this, there are efforts to adjust for these confounders such as through statistical techniques (ie sensitivity analyses)

Established in 2019, and funded by the Hermon Slade Foundation and Taronga, this project aims to develop and test novel #nonlethalmanagement tools for #dingoes, and to further our understanding and appreciation of this iconic but much-maligned #Australian #carnivore.

This #coexistence officer provides the community with access to evidence-based #HWC mitigation tools, including eye-cow, and is working to provide protective livestock collars, and flashing lights (#lionlights) at overnight enclosures. Image

In this project, we were challenged by our professor @lmrosalino to develop a conservation plan that would be hypothetically submitted for a research grant. We used a modified version of the @ruffordgrants as template for the project. We chose to focus on the brown bear. (1/8)
The brown bear is one of the most iconic carnivores in the world, existing in most of the Northern Hemisphere. In Portugal, it has been extinct since the 1800’s, but there are still 2 relic populations in the Iberian Peninsula: the Pyrenees and the Cantabrian Mountains. (2/8)

1/ Okay, this seems to keep coming up. People who are clearly very fat adapted (like, say, very athletic #LMHR #Carnivores), but who have lower ketones -- specifically, BHB (beta hydroxybutyrate) at perhaps 0.2 to 1.0

And they say, "Hey! Why aren't I in ketosis?"

Let's unpack..
2/ Do we commonly see the athletes who are healthy on a mixed or even carb-centric diet with low levels of blood glucose? Yes, we do.

In fact, it's when we see high levels of fasting glucose in the blood *in spite* of being athletic that we start to worry, of course...
3/ ... We don't see an athlete with low glucose and assume they are not using as much of it as the couch potato with high glucose. Rather, it's likely the other way around.

In other words, accumulation in the bloodstream isn't a clear indication of use, it can mean the opposite!
