#BloJo is a scandal of clear misconduct in public office. Boris (as Foreign Secretary) was attempting to secure a highly-paid job for Carrie with whom he was having sex while at 'work' in his parliamentary office. His wife was being treated for Cancer. Indefensible #ToriesOut

Misconduct in public office is a common law offence. Johnson’s behaviour occurred in his office when he was foreign minister. When sex occurs while the public official is on duty the concern is the dereliction of duty & unprofessionalism.

By being caught the situation opens itself to being BRIBED which is a huge problem esp for someone who is PM. The Metropolitan Police should add this to their ever growing Westminster caseload, or at the very least the parliamentary standards commissioner should take a look.

I've been thinking a lot about #Carriegate and why No.10 threw so much at suppressing it, when the story was actually no worse than the average excesses of this gov't and the decision to supress it, so obviously fraught with risk. I have a theory. This is pure speculation. 1/
The possibility of a Streisand effect making the story much bigger than if left alone was always so great that the heavy-handed intervention makes no sense - especially given that most of the information in it had been in the public domain for months and passed largely unseen. 2/
UNLESS... Johnson extracted conditional support from someone (or a group) around the no confidence vote, in exchange for a firm undertaking that there would be not a scintilla of scandal from No.10 for a given time period. (Until by-elections? Summer recess? Party conference?) 3/

A thread on #CarrieGate and journalism.

We are often told by Tory ministers and Tory papers that journalism is vital to a healthy democracy. This is often deployed as an pretext by the former to do favours for the latter. It's true none the less . . . 1/10
. . . and one of the reasons our democracy is in such a mess is that we don't have nearly enough decent journalism. As #CarrieGate shows.

Journalists serve democracy by informing citizens of the state of the world. They can't tell you everything, but . . . 2/10
... they should give you all the important stuff so you can make your mind up as an informed citizen. Not reporting #CarrieGate (like not reporting the economic consequences of Brexit) is not just bad journalism. It is an offence against journalism and against society. 3/10

Look, Carrie Johnson was eminently suited to a £100k FO job. Here she is in 2012 with the Russian Ambassador at the launch of Conservative Friends of Russia, set up by the later CEO of Vote Leave with the help of Russian agent Sergey Nalobin.

...at least, I'm pretty sure this is Carrie Johnson (then Symonds). Also pictured here is John Whittingdale MP, a founder member of Conservative Friends of Russia, whom she accompanied to this delightful event, where raffle prizes included a biography of Putin.
#Carriegate
Carrie Johnson & the Tory MPs at the launch of Conservative Friends of Russia must have known the nature of Putin's regime. Putin had already presided over massacres in Chechnya, invaded Georgia & ordered the murder of Alexander Litvinenko in London with radioactive polonium.
