Today during the new phase of #UkraineRussiaWar, I'll talk about why Nordic, Eastern Europeans and Central Asians want #Russia to be disintegrated, and how pro-Russian supporters seek to undermine these narratives. Thread. 🧵 Image
The map of Russia is very big. Including the Kaliningrad exclave, Russia borders 13 countries on land and one country at the sea. However, Tsarist and Soviet conquests also led to Russia having some sort of influence beyond the border. Image
Being an inland empire, Russia expanded via land, a different compared to typical Western maritime empires. And Russia has, for a long time, treated its colonies in a brutal, repressive manner. ImageImageImageImage

Why are #Azerbaijan #Iran 🇦🇿🇮🇷 relations so bad?

Five 5️⃣ simple facts 🧵 (below) help explain why the 🇦🇿🇮🇷 Azeri-Iranian relationship has deteriorated and what’s really behind the recent attack against 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan’s embassy in Tehran ⤵️ . . .
1️⃣ #Sociologically: Azerbaijan 🇦🇿 & Iran 🇮🇷 are very different societies. Iran’s regime has a hardline, old and extreme interpretation of Shia-religion, while Azerbaijan has a more modern interpretation (gender parity, customs etc). It lay at the root of many differences . . .
2️⃣ #Historically: Iran (& Russia) colonised Azeri and South Caucasian people, while today large Azeri communities continue to live inside of Iran, many of which have strong linguistic and cultural bonds to Azerbaijan and do not accept Tehran’s radical governance-style . . .

BREAKING: #Armenia 🇦🇲 and #Azerbaijan 🇦🇿 have agreed to sign a formal peace deal which includes an official delimitation of the border by the end of the year.
This deal (if successfully followed through) would be a major diplomatic victory for the European Union.

Just last week intens negotiations between 🇦🇲🇦🇿 were taking place under 🇫🇷🇪🇺 supervision. The Kremlin was completely left out of the process
News of a possible deal does not mean that peace in the #Caucasus is within reach. The #Kremlin could try to spoil an agreement, #Aliyev is still an expansionist authoritarian, and the future status of #NagornoKarabakh will probably remain undetermined.

#OnThisDay Sep 15, 1918, the Ottoman Army of Islam captured #Baku. With the ethnic #Azerbaijan'i Turks at their side, they carried out a systematic massacre of the #Armenia'ns in the city, during which its estimated that 15,000 to 20,000 Armenians died.

#Turkey #ArmenianGenocide
A terrible panic in Baku ensued once the Turks entered the city. The Armenians crowded the harbor in a frantic effort to escape. Regular Ottoman troops were not allowed to enter the city for 2 days, so that the local irregulars – bashibozuks – would conduct looting and pillaging.
Later, Ottoman troops participated alongside the irregulars & the Azeris of #Baku in the plundering, who then turned their fury against the city's #Armenia'n population. Calls by the German officers to treat the local population with leniency were ignored by Ottoman commanders.

Once upon a time I found a comment about Kouban. It was written by a perhaps #Chirkassian man, who wrote with a kind of hatred that #Ukrainians claim 'his' Motherland. 1. Ukrainians protect #Ukraine in the borders of 1991. 2. Do Chirkassians fight for Chirkassia?
The great once culture of Proto-Indo-Europeans used to be in the borders of modern #Ukraine and in ethnical borders of #Ukrainians (including land #RussiaIsATerroristState has captured 200 y.ago). It is speculative to claim people did not interbrid within these areas
If there had been trading between #Ukrainians and #Causcasians and #Crimean people (#Qyrymli) then there had been marriages between those people. It is certain Adygeans came to Ukraine at least 1000 ago and bdrought their culture, later been assimilated

I have never heard about this person, he seems to have almost no qualifications as a historian or academic, in #Azerbaijan'i sources he is referenced highly and called a famous historian, which no one can verify.
Ekozyants tries very hard to convince readers that in history Armenia was always a geographical region, yet again a very childish and amateur approach. It's even more surprising that some people are prone to quoting him as an authoritative source.

#HistoryDistortion
If readers are questioning whether ancient Armenians are genetically similar to their modern descendants, here’s a number of scientific articles on the genetic heritage of the #Armenia'n people showing their existence in #Caucasus since the Bronze Age.

Ancient Iranian Devices, Insignia & Monograms
نشان های کهن ایرانی

One of the most enigmatic, least studied aspects of #Iranian history & culture

I might one day turn this into a paper. But for now, let's look at this really cool part of our history! I am so excited!!

What I will call "devices" are abstract signs, seals... that got progressively more complex by end of #Sasanian era. They are also called #Tamga (or tamgha)
Tamga from Turkish. In Middle Persian and modern Persian, the word would be Nishaan or Neshaan ( Ossetian gakk)

These have an amazing and long history. They might have started as signs for cattle, later for clans & families. Were used by people across Eurasia

Judging by the report to #Putin, yesterday's talks between #Russian Foreign Minister #Lavrov & his Turkish counterpart Çavuşoğlu didn't bring any significant results. They agreed to continue discussing sensitive issues, refraining from harmful to bilateral relations steps
1/9
#Putin was dissatisfied with the result of #Lavrov's visit to #Turkey & talked about the fact that the Turkish side in the negotiation process is seeking tangible concessions to the detriment of #Russian positions. He traditionally gave Lavrov rollicking
2/9
It's important for #Putin to understand the actions of the Turkish leadership & to have close contact with #Erdogan, given the preparation and possible implementation of a geopolitical project in the #Caucasus

In the South #Caucasus there has not been a common response to the invasion of Ukraine. 🇬🇪 is bound to a strategy of “non-deterrence”, 🇦🇲 remains subordinated to Russia’s security interests, and 🇦🇿 pursues its balancing policy.

A thread🧵
#Armenia is the only Russian ally in the South Caucasus. As a result of its defeat in the Second Karabakh War in 2020, Armenia is more reliant than ever on its security partnership with Russia, which leads the government to avoid any statement on the war in Ukraine.
Armenia hosts two Russian military bases - the Russian 102nd Military Base in Gyumri and the Russian 3624th Airbase in Erebuni Airport. Additionally, the Armenian population still living in Karabakh is dependent on Russian peacekeeping troops for its own survival.

The presence of the #terrorist & intelligence arm of #QudsForce on Turkish soil. How #Turkey enables Iranians to operate as a central base country, for the logistical & operational operation of QF & #Iranian intelligence vis-à-vis target countries in Europe & the Middle East.
1
Iranian intelligence sees it as #Iran's "operational backyard" vis-à-vis the Middle East and Europe, as #Turkey has a number of clear advantages, including:
- proximity to Iran and relatively easy mobility of operatinal it and through it (air and land)
2
- Iranian citizens do not need a visa to enter the country
- This geographical location central and attractive holding secret meetings with #terrorist organizations throughout the world (Middle East, Europe, South East Asia)

Just read the @sfchronicle article by @RepAdamSchiff & @RepSpeier. First, during decades in Congress, these esteemed politicians have never said a single word about illegal occupation of 20% of #Azerbaijan’s lands by #Armenia & 1 million forcibly displaced #Azerbaijanis. 1/13
Invasion, total ethnic cleansing & nearly 30-year-long occupation of #Azerbaijan’s sovereign territory by #Armenia was well-documented, incl. by @UN Security Council resolutions and successive US administrations, starting with #Clinton Administration. 2/13
Brutal massacres against #Azerbaijani civilian population by Armenian troops, incl. the #Khojaly Genocide of 1992, which @HRW called the #largest massacre in the conflict#, are also well documented. 3/13

During the last #KarabakhWar, many experts and journalists shared their views on the history of the conflict. They were able to inform completely ignorant people. But there are some issues that all experts should be able to explain more objectively. ⬇️
Before moving on to these aspects, I could remind that the conflict between Armenians and Azerbaijanis is divided into 4 periods:
1) The period of first revolution in Russia (1905-1906)
2) The period of formation of nation states after Russian Empire (1918-1920) ⬇️
3) The first years of Sovietisation in the South #Caucasus (1920-1923) and
4) Period of “perestroika” in the USSR, which began with Armenia's land claim to Karabakh (1988). ⬇️

Aν κρίνω από ανεξάρτητo visual confirmation δράσης των τουρκικών drones στο #NagornoKarabagh η #Armenia έχει χάσει 35 άρματα μάχης (main battle tanks).

1.#Turkey's position - to support #Azerbaijan - meant to disguise its interest - to extend its influence in #Caucasus.
Turkey hopscotching crises -#Greece/#Cyprus,#Libya,#Syria now Karabakh to increase its capitalization in the market of regional powers w/ great power ambitions
