India's Mobility Surge | This migration thread, third in the #Census2011Migration series, shows why the 21st century marks a dramatic break from the past. Internal migration rates of India which was around 30% for decades, surged to 38% in 2011, riding higher economic growth.
This mobility surge was broad based for rural and urban India and for males and females (marriage being an important reason for female mobility). Migration rate for urban India shot up from 36% to 46% in 2011.
The urban migration rate went up because of a rise in rural-urban migration volumes (to 78 million people) but more so due to urban-urban migration (to also 78 million people). For the first time, Urban-Urban migration was as SIGNIFICANT as Rural-Urban Migration!

First, the number of immigrants/return migrants or those who reported last place of residence outside India grew only marginally from around 5.1 million in 2001 to 5.5 million in 2011. In fact, the number for males fell by 6% over the decade and the number for females grew by 20%
This marginal increase was because of countries outside Asia, which reported large increases, including perhaps spuriously for Uganda as reported in the previous thread-

The number of people who reported their last place of residence as Uganda in Africa rose from 694 in 2001 to 151,363 in 2011. Male increase from 355 to 39,663 and female increase from 339 to 111,700 !
The female excess is across Indian states and most of these Ugandan immigrants/return migrants are in UP and Bihar where their stock rose from 5 in 2001 to 94,704 in 2011 !
