I'm #Jewish ok? I wasn't going to tweet this but....it's the sweet and sour I exist in. I met a very nice lady at the kosher grocery store who told me that they didn't have lulavim/etrogim but that her community was giving them to those who needed and told me where to go (1)
We went to the place, I had a kippa on and didn't sound out of place but the first thing was one of the boys with the adults (I'm not going to speculate why) ran off screaming in terror and while the adults present were direct and fairly cordial they did not respond to (2)
To me saying #ChagSameach or wishing them a gut Shabbos . I tried to say goodbye a second time and thank you but was ignored and kinda got weird looks.
Like. I didn't pull out my book or show my credentials or achievements. I was just a Jew inquiring about the arba minim. (3)

115.02/ #ShavuaTov everyone & hello to the last day of 5782! I admit that I get a special thrill about skipping "Vayehi Noam" even though doing so implies my upcoming week has many days of isurei melakha. I love yuntif, honest I do, but I am a fan of writing & the internet, too.

98.02/ Valuable thread about the gun industry and I learned from him an excellent term I will now incorporate into my social theory: Agnotology = "the cultural production of ignorance."
98.03/ Wow: "The science is abundantly clear: More guns do not stop crime. Guns kill more children each year than auto accidents. More children die by gunfire in a year than on-duty police officers and active military members." (Scientific American)

I was asked a question about autistic food sensitivities and #Pesach and I've been able to present the issue to one of my poskim and I want to detail the answer, in basic terms, for public consumption (no pun intended)
2/ This is part of my larger project of translating disability issues into halakhic language. IMO there are so many people in needless pain. Yet knowledgeable Orthodox Jews will understand that Jewish law is broad, deep & rich to accommodate any issue.
3/ I am not a posek, I am operating as a "halakhist" - basically a legal scholar with an expertise in medical issues (among others) - and IMO while invisible disabilities lack overt signs, they can be "translated" by seeing the behavior surrounding them.

62.02/ A custom on #YomKippur is to wear a kittel, an all white garment that has ambivalent symbolism: men wear one under their wedding canopy and they are also buried in it. I mentioned to a physician friend that it can also be seen as "Jewish scrubs."
62.03/ "But life is ironic" is just boss-level shade. I mean, I have my theological differences with the pontiff, but I can imagine we see eye-to-eye about anti-vaxxers.(h.t. @dick_nixon)

61.02/ I am a fan of the professional sport of American Football and, as a child of Pittsburgh, a particular avid supporter of the #Steelers. I apologize ahead of time for some intemperate comments that may be made during the season which could be non-sequitur for non-NFLers.
61.03/ From last night at the #Mets-Yankees game, a scandal that Fox's cameras lingered on that hateful flag. Ironically it symbolizes the way 9-11 was perverted by corrupt bad-actors from day one.

60.03/ It's absolutely crucial to hear what these conservatives think of women: as "host bodies" of a fetus. Women are objects to them. Dehumanization is the first step to the worst atrocities.

Sure, "polls aren't votes", but 15 pts down means Trump's (ym"sh) vulnerable, dries up fundraising, allows GOP electeds to contradict him publicly, allows reporters to treat him normally & not as the magician of 2016 who commands a cult of violent kooks.
To combat the complacency that the polling imbalance could bring, I suggest telling fellow anti-Trumpites that no matter how much DJT is down in November, when you vote, it will feel as good as punching him in the face with all of your strength

1/ By the time the State of Israel was established in May 1948, 3 years had passed since the end of the WW2 and the Holocaust. Given the enormity of the crime, it became difficult to choose a single day as the most appropriate to commemorate this dark time in recent history.
2/ In fact, in 1947, even before Israel was established, the Chief Rabbinate of Mandatory Palestine set up a committee to think of a date for a memorial. They thought to relate it to the annihilation of the Warsaw Jewish community, which before the war at 500,000 Jews.

A #Passover parable for our times. The Torah speaks of 4 kinds of people who use Zoom:

The Wise
The Wicked
The Simple
The One Who Does Not Know How to “Mute”
The Wise Person says: “I’ll handle the admin feature controls and chat rooms, and forward the Cloud recording transcript after the call.”
The Wicked Person says: “Since I have unlimited duration, I scheduled the meeting for 6 hours—as it says in the Haggadah, whoever prolongs the telling of the story is praiseworthy.”

Here is a thread my Covenant & Conversation essay on #VezotHabracha called "End Without an Ending". You can read it at bit.ly/2J5cW5d. #ChagSameach Image
In #Judaism, time becomes the arena of human growth. The future is not like the past. Nor can it be predicted, foreseen, the way the end of any myth can be foreseen.
Jacob, at the end of his life, told his children, “Gather round, and I will tell you what will happen to you at the end of days” (Gen. 49:1). Rashi, quoting the Talmud, says: “Jacob sought to reveal the end, but the Divine Presence departed from him.”

#Sukkot is the only festival about which Tanach says that it will one day be celebrated by the whole world (Zechariah 14: 16-19). The twenty-first century is teaching us what this might mean.
For most of history, most people have experienced a universe that did not change fundamentally in their lifetimes.
But there have been rare great ages of transition: the birth of agriculture, the first cities, the dawn of civilisation, the invention of printing, and the industrial revolution. These were destabilising times, and they brought disruption in their wake.

As we approach the end of #Sukkot and head into #SheminiAtzeret and #SimchatTorah, here is a short thread (taken from the introduction to my @korenpublishers #Sukkot mahzor) about the duality in #Judaism of universality and particularity. I wish you all a #ChagSameach (again!). Image
@korenpublishers #Sukkot represents more clearly than any other festival the dualities in Judaism. The four kinds - the #lulav and #etrog - are a symbol of the land of #Israel, while the #sukkah reminds us of exile.
@korenpublishers The four kinds are a ritual of rain, while eating in the sukkah depends on the absence of rain. Above all, though, there is a tension between the universality of nature and the particularity of history.
