A 🧵on the #Dmitrievsky #Chemical Plant explosion and fire. On @Twitter I mostly post on Data Security (20year as a CxO and #Votehacking. But I also have 9 years as CEO and longer on BODs of #AdvancedMaterials / #NanoMaterials.
The extreme damage, perhaps total destruction of this chemical plant is going to have a spectacular and massive impact on the #RussianArmy. Possibly grinding entire systems to a stop in weeks, perhaps even days.
Like many industrial sectors in #Russia, they tend to be centralized, massive + singular. This is generally a result of historic centralization of production under the Soviet model, and a fear of building massive high-cost infrastructure by nonRU firms #BASF #DuPont etc.

We are stocked to have In2science mentor Annelisa (@RigoniStella) from @RMIT take over our Twitter for #TakeoverThursday!
Annelisa is a PhD candidate in Chemistry, who is going to talk about some of the things they have learnt during their past 8 years of study in STEM at RMIT!
First up – my very first few years at @RMIT! Completing 2 degrees in Applied Science & Nanotechnology, I learnt so much about how the world around us works on the smaller scale – and also how to make cool compounds in the chemistry labs! A variety of purple, yellow, blue and white coloured chemica
During these first four years completing these degreed, I also had the opportunity to tour the Australian Synchrotron @ANSTO, which I learnt is currently used to carry out crucial research in Australia! A several students residing within a room containing several

2/ Why couldn't we differentiate #chemistry by the intended use case's unique application requirements?

Why use the same chemistry across sports cars,
mass market cars, and pick-up trucks?
3/ Why does an atom of #lithium effectively travel around the world twice before it makes it into a vehicle?

Why wasn't the battery #supplychain being built right alongside the battery factory itself?

What more can we do with iron-based cathode chemistries?

OK. I'll say it. What are we to conclude from the all male @NobelPrize awards in #STEM these past two weeks?
1st. I'm sure the winners were all deserving. There's nothing to take away from them, and that is not my intention.

2nd. But there are so many deserving #WomenInSTEM, not the least of whom is Katalin Karikó @kkariko.

Imagine your research lays the groundwork for a novel #vaccine that is leading the world out of a once-per-century global pandemic. Surely that is worth at least one if not two @NobelPrize awards?

Removal of HEC chairman: Let us think beyond personalities. The #PoliticalEconomy of #HigherEducation in #Pakistan is such that whoever had challenged the status quo, system would have turned against him/her. I think following led the removal of chairman #HEC
1) #HEC R&D grants system was revamped to fund those projects only which had an impact (determined by peer review). #HEC Closed many projects which failed peer review.
2) set up #disciplinary panels for peer review headed by well-reputed scholars such as Dr Zulfiqar Bhutta, Dr Noman ul Haq, Dr Tariq Hassan, Dr Sarosh Lodhi etc., to make fund/no-fund decisions in Committee.

“What should a #UniversalTheory for life look like? It will have to account for features of #LivingSystems that no current laws of #Physics and #Chemistry can explain. That is, it will have to pinpoint processes in the universe that occur only because of life."

How are mRNA vaccines made? A chemist’s perspective. TL;DR A DNA plasmid is used as template for the in vitro transcription of DNA to mRNA which is then packaged in a lipid nanoparticle. But it is a bit complicated than that. (image @AFox_Perth theconversation.com/australia-may-… ) 1/35
I am chemist with a life-long interest in viruses and self-assembly, working in the nanomedicine @ARCCoEBionano field for over 10 years. More recently, our group has been synthesising short RNA (unpublished work) with my colleague #ozchem @Fahrenbachus @UNSWScience 2/35
So when I heard first about mRNA vaccines back in April I was fascinated. Since then I have also become part of group mentioned in theconversation.com/australia-may-… article by @AFox_Perth that is arguing the case for local mRNA (and other RNA + DNA products) capabilities in Australia 3/35

Tesla’s Gigafactory 1 in Nevada has a annual capacity of 37GWh (@benchmarkmin data). Chemistry improvements have nudged the energy density numbers up

Panasonic’s $100m will take it to 40GWh. The world’s biggest lithium ion battery plant by some way. 2nd = LG Chem Nanjing @ 28GWh
Subscribe or trial to our lithium ion battery Megafactory database here: benchmarkminerals.com/contact/
Our baseline for @Tesla Gigafactory post expansion - so 2021 capacity - is 40GWh. If new chemistry is sucesffullu implement will increase this capacity further to 42GWh.

Rule: battery plants can expand without building any new equipment #chemistry

Here's a fabulous bit of #chemistry I've just learned about:

French physician Séverin Icard devised a test to confirm death: write "I am really dead" on a piece of paper using lead(II) acetate (Pb(CH₃COO)₂). It's soluble & invisible when dry...

THREAD 1/5
The paper is then placed over the nose & mouth of the "corpse". One of the gases produced during decomposition is sulfur dioxide (SO₂), which reacts with lead(II) acetate to form lead sulfide (PbS) which is black. So the writing becomes visible...
2/5
The corpse thus has a piece of a paper with "I am really dead" on their face.

(I do not know if Terry Pratchett knew about this & Granny's "I Ate'nt Dead" sign was a reference. Wouldn't surprise me. Perhaps @terryandrob knows...)

BUT...
