I am 55yo and childfree by choice, happily so. And you know what has made that choice possible? My two abortions. feministgiant.com/p/abortion-is-… #Childfree
In 1996, I had an “illegal” abortion in Egypt and in 2000, I had a “legal” abortion in the US.

I use inverted commas because the State can fuck off with its opinions about what I can and can’t do with my uterus.

That control belongs to me.

I was not raped.

I was not sick.

The pregnancies did not threaten my life.

I did not already have children.

I just did not want to be pregnant.

I did not want to have a child.

And so I had two abortions.

It is good to see articles about being childfree by choice. This one features mostly white people bbc.com/worklife/artic… h/t @rerutled #Childfree
I wrote this essay on being childfree by choice because we need to hear from more women of colour and women from different cultural and faith backgrounds as well as trans men and non-binary people who choose to be childfree. I have my own book planned. feministgiant.com/p/unmothering
I'm happy with the life I have created. I have never wondered what it would have been like to have children.

I say that because we often hear “you’ll regret it when it’s too late.” Well, here I am on the other side -- it is “too late” -- and I am here to say: I do not regret it

My parents preferred I be happy & make my own life choices. I'm single, never married, #childfree #ChildfreeByChoice & in #menopause. I was free to give my parents (also my family, my family of origin) caregiving help & now I mentor & live an intellectually, emotionally full life
Some people choose to be childfree for environmental reasons (biggest consumers of irreplaceable natural resources are people) some choose childfree because we want to do other things besides have children (it's not about materialism or piling up money, those are billionaires).
Moreover patriarchy & the crushing stereotype of the Perfect Mother are crushing stereotypes by which all girls & women but literally no boys and men are judged. Men almost never volunteer to be primary caregivers to their own children (or their ill or disabled adult relatives).

So threatening is the rejection of heterosexual sex, marriage, and child-rearing--an idea known as 6B4T-- that Chinese feminist groups who have espoused those things were abruptly kicked offline. See this by @LetaHong

6B4T originated with South Korea’s radical feminist movement tribuneindia.com/news/archive/w…

First they came for the hipsters. But everyone else was a hipster but me, so I went after the hipsters too.
Then they came for the fat people, but you can't see I'm overweight on my avi, so I'm #FatPeopleHate.
Then they came for the children, arguably the most oppressed people in the planet, but I'm #ChildFree so I vented my hate for them on reddit.

Yes. And, since most editors are/were writers, read their work, too.
I've been writing magazine and newspaper articles about sex & gender for 15+ years. My advice and reminder to all new writers: The people you're pitching are people. Get to know them.
I remember a PR agency once pitched me on a children's book about frogs. Not about sex. Not about gender. Just a general children's book.

A different take? While living on an overpopulated planet with limited resources & orphaned children, choosing to procreate is quite possibly the most selfish thing that anyone could do.
FWIW, I don't actually think that parents are inherently selfish. I also don't think that #childfree people are inherently selfish. The decision to have children or not to have children is personal, and it's not on anyone to make a judgment call either way.
Btw, just because someone doesn't have children of their own doesn't mean they haven't spent a significant portion of their life caring for, financially supporting, and/or raising another human. #Children #childfree

Okay, just watched the playback. Yep, it's lagged. Will tweak that next week. That aside .... NICE!!! Didn't realize how much terrain was covered. Hence, why I watched the replay; needed to remember which links I said I'd drop.
Here we go! Interesting shit for your radar re: #COVID19 and #SexualHealth ...
.@okcupid suggested I should remove my geographic restrictions and talk to sexy people around the world. So, I did. 🌏 Went on a "date" with a man in Holland. 🇳🇱

#Childfree & #paidleaveforall communities can coexist. ❤ It's possible to be inclusive about the word "family".
Everyone should have the freedom to define family for themselves. ❤

✔ Instead of time off for "birth", time off for "care"
✔ Instead of "newborn child" or
"family member", how about "loved one"
