I am a #unicorn! you may believe that, or not.

my sense of self isn't dependent upon outsiders' scorn; in any case, I'm quite content to be regarded as a mere figment of a crazy person's imagination. that's little impediment to my life and purpose in the Pnictogen Wing.

(1/x)
I daresay that I'm unusually *practical* for a unicorn. my interests are mundane ones; I like science and engineering and working in shops and keeping things running as smoothly as possible, and while I'm no atheist or positivist, I leave magic and religion to others.

(2/x)
all the same—it's a painful thing, being a unicorn in a world that has attempted to *wipe out* creativity and mysticism and magic—a world that embraces cruelty and casual sneers at suffering and death. I may have been ethereal once; I am not, now.

let's try again. I wanted to write more *specifically* about Mr. @elonmusk—speculating about why he's the catastrophic person he is, based on what's popularly known about him. everything I'm going to mention is something reported in the popular press (not by @mtaibbi.)

(1/x)
we know that Mr. Musk had an abusive father, whom @elonmusk has had little good to say about. the man was typical colonialist trash—a South African grifter and speculator who *got lucky*, making a lot of money quickly with a partial share in an apartheid-era emerald mine.

(2/x)
Mr. Musk (and certainly his #ElonMusk fan club) has tried as hard as possible to suppress any chatter about the emerald mine; Mr. @elonmusk himself, a prolific and habitual liar, has even tried to pretend that the press made it up. but it's too broadly reported to deny.

Complained to @LibrariesWest about Beyond Magenta, a book about transgender teens. Book contains a passage about a child saying they were sexually mature at six & enjoyed giving oral sex to men. Later decided they were trans.

No comment or judgment on this, no suggestion this might have been abuse or neglect, just taken as read. This was a Stonewall Honor book 2015. Six copies available, 2 billed as adult, 4 YA teen. Reviewed in School Library Journal as suitable 14+. Tagged as juvenile literature.
The book was already the subject of controversy when it was inc a schools RSE pack sponsored by Asda in 2020

This week's story in #TheDollsStorybook is "Disappointment." Pippa notices that the other dolls don't give up when they fail at something they really want to do well. #ChildrensStories

How To Be A Real Man picture book. Apparently being a real man means holding up a sign about climate change. #ChildrensBooks ImageImageImageImage
This book demonizes manly men from the past and gives no account of the good, strong men that also existed.
Oh and the author... Image

1/3 A short thread of an #Belgian/English children's book with today in Chinese history, Tin Tin & Blue Lotus #丁丁历险记(蓝莲花). My kids (7&10) had loved it for years. I just had a sweet moment of talking about Chinese 9.18 history and kids today.

2/3 My kids had read Tin Tin Series by Belgian artist at least 20 times, each time exclaiming on funny passages, particularly the Blue Lotus. Today(9/18) I casually mentioned that there will be sirens in Chinese cities as is unofficial start of WWII there.

3/3 War can be so brutal and random. Mukden Incident started by low level Japanese soldier but moved countries #China and #Japan toward 14 yrs of war(1931-1945) When I mention 9.18, kids instantly said, yes, that railroad thing, it was in Tin Tin! I laughed. Make laughs, not war.

I'm grateful to Samina Mishra (author) and Tarique Aziz (illustrator) for recording Jamlo's story. Because we do tend to forget easily, and if we hadn't lived through this point in time, all this might even have seem far-fetched. #jamlowalks
With the present government in power, I wouldn't be surprised if every story about migrants walking home disappeared from our archives. Which makes this picture book published by Penguin India, and Jamlo's story even more important.
As a writer, I marvel at the tone that's used through the book. Samina's writing feels like a quiet observation and never feels gimmicky. I liked that even as we get glimpses of diverse children's lives, it never judgmental. #childrensbooks

We're about to start our second Open Research Seminar for this term: Professor Michael Burke on The Language of Julia Donaldson: Rhetoric, Style and Cognition. Special thank you to #CRCLC PhD candidate Vera Veldhuizen for putting together today's seminar #kidlit #ChildrensBooks
Michael Burke takes from Classical Rhetoric to Cognitive Linguistics and explains how he went from being a professor of rhetoric and a linguist to a scholar of children's literature - spolier alert: being a parent was involved #kidlit #ChildrensBooks
Michael Burke cites the work of current #CRCLC chair, Professor Maria Nikolajeva, and future #CRCLC chair, Professor Karen Coats, inspired his thinking on cognitive linguistics, alongside the experience of reading out aloud to his children #kidlit #ChildrensBooks

It's time to start Giving #Comics back to Children with Professor Laurence Grove
We begin in Galsgow 1954, when a group of 400 children ran amok at the city's Southern Necropolis in pursuit of a vampire - and comics got the blame! A clever segue from Prof. Laurence Grove into the long history of debates around the moral value of #comics for child readers
And thus we move on to the introduction of the Comics Code and the French campaign against Mickey Mouse and his compatriots; Prof. Laurence Grove ponders how to understand this moment in the zeitgeist when #comics we're understood as being for children, but not good for them

TOP TEN TIPS FOR AUTHORS/ILLUSTRATORS VISITING SCHOOLS
1. Don't worry about remembering teachers' names. Call all female teachers "love" and all male teachers "son", regardless of their age.

2. As well as asking for "ice-cold beer instead of that lukewarm water", ask for a bucket in case you "need to go" during your event.

3. If a laptop's been provided, pull out all the wires and stick it in your holdall before the event starts.
