After the recent military drills in the Taiwan region, #China’s spokesperson of the Eastern Theater Command said they will closely observe the situation in the Taiwan Straits and regularly organize combat readiness security patrols to safeguard national sovereignty.#CrossStrait
According to Chinese military expert and TV commentator Song Zhongping, “combat readiness” means #China will carry out security patrols to expel enemy planes and ships whenever its sovereignty is threatened, fully equipping with weapons and personnel.

#CrossStrait

My new article just out @ForeignAffairs argues that the #US and #China are not directly competing for #SoftPower. Instead, what we are witnessing is #coexistence of their distinct approaches and practices. foreignaffairs.com/articles/china… 1/10
First, I contrast the more ideational or ideological #SoftPower conception and practice by the #US with the more #pragmatic approach of #China. The #US emphasizes liberal values, whereas #China stresses material welfare and mutual development as part of its vision. 2/10
The #US public diplomacy celebrates and promotes idealized vision of #American democracy. #China promotes its economic accomplishments and fuses practical benefits with cultural programming. This distinction is especially notable in the #GlobalSouth. 3/10

Whether China-US relations can return to the track of healthy and stable development depends on whether the US side can honor its commitments.
China and the US have maintained close communication on the #UkraineCrisis, and we have common understanding on realizing #ceasefire & peace and providing #HumanitarianAid. But we have different views on how to promote #peacetalks and realize lasting security in Europe.

This article says that US military buys surveillance cameras from China. In reality, it's not only cameras, pretty much the vast majority of spare parts needed by US military come from China. US has banned Huawei but Pentagon obtained a waiver.

Now when US fighter jets have a quality problem, they blame China for defective spare parts. China isn't even aware that some of the screws it sold to US vendors in bulk found themselves on the US fighter jets. These were normally destined for civilian use of minor importance.
For China, if they knew the spare parts were destined for fighter jets, they would have provided products of military grade and charged a much higher price. It breaks China's heart to see US fighter jets worth hundreds of millions of dollars being scrapped for

3. None of the major international crises in the 21st century, including the current pandemic, is a traditional security threat & can be resolved with the toolbox of great-power competition. The world has changed.
