#China_Russia: Putin has invited Chinese companies to invest in Russia and replace Western companies that exited as a result of (self) sanction. Russia does not have the resources or time to create from scratch technological capabilities that compensate for those of the West.⤵️

A Russia weakened by sanctions is better for Beijing than one defeated in/by Ukraine with Western military support. China has a double task: a) to avoid a Ukrainian scenario in Taiwan, when the West supports the island to counter China (as they to in relation to Ukraine against⤵️
Russian aggression); b) not letting Russia lose the war because that could basically serve as a lesson to be learned that the West will remind Beijing to deter any major attacks on Taiwan.⤵️
#China_Russia: Xi's trip to Russia to meet Putin reveals many interesting aspects. Starting a longer thread on this (geo)political event: 1) Xi's choice to visit Putin (who is wanted by the ICC) as his first destination after being re-elected for a third term. ⤵️
Xi doesn't care about reputational costs because they don’t exist for him in China or the Global South; 2) Putin has already welcomed Xi's 12-point peace agreement between Ukraine (victim) and Russia (aggressor), and agreed to discuss the details. The respective proposal ⤵️
favors Russia not a long-lasting peace for Ukraine, including the de-occupation of its territories off Russian military forces; 3) Almost immediately upon arrival, Xi endorsed Putin for re-election during the 2024 presidential election.⤵️
#China_Russia: There is a misconception that China is using a weakened Russia to extract more material opportunities from it. In my opinion, Putin is also benefiting from a strengthened alliance with Xi (who is going to visit Putin after another autocrat Lukashenko):⤵️
1) China watches and learns from the geopolitical confrontation between Russia and the West, sparked by Putin's war against Ukraine; 2) Russia is exposing the West's toolbox of measures (sanctions) that could be used should China act militarily to gain control of Taiwan.⤵️
Some of the measures are already implemented on the basis of technological competition (for example, export control). Both parties - Russia/Putin and China/Xi - are consciously playing a geopolitical game, in which their rivals are in the West.⤵️
#China_Russia: The narrative that the US would be behind the sabotaged NS2, which Russia promoted from day one, is picking up again, expanding the geography. Some voices in the Chinese media are using speculation that Washington is somehow involved in the blowing up of the⤵️
Russian gas pipeline. Russian disinformation narratives about NS2 are being used by these Chinese voices to counter details about the US investigation of the Chinese spy-balloon. It's fair to say that no investigation by Germany, Denmark, or other European nations whose waters⤵️
NS2 crosses found any evidence of a clear Russian fingerprint. The investigations also failed to identify anything to show the US may be involved. Investigations must continue and the security of Europe's energy supply in the face of the threat of⤵️
