Christopher D'Olier Reeve nace en 1952 en Nueva York en el seno de una familia acomodada. Tras estudiar en la universidad de Cornell, se gradúa y es seleccionado para estudiar arte dramático en la universidad Juilliard. Solamente lo consiguen dos actores: él y Robin Williams.
Su primera actuación relevante en Broadway fue en la obra "A matter of gravity" junto a Katherine Hepburn, donde la leyenda de Hollywood interpretaba a la abuela de éste. Obtuvo buenas críticas, pero Reev estuvo muy lejos de obtener un gran reconocimiento.
