Friends, I need help. Ongoing and increasing Trump mistreatment of immigrants, esp families plus the activism so from #CitizenPresence travelers is spurring more people to join our effort. I’m primary fundraiser. Need a jolt of funds. Who can amplify and spur? 1/
Here is the latest brief synopsis of what #CitizenPresence is and how it works, and why I think it is practically and morally imperative. 2/

1/ I went down to El Paso Monday & Tuesday to be part of #citizenpresence and get friends and family involved more in resisting the concentration camps there. The trip was disheartening on so many levels. I knew going during the week wouldn’t have as much of a turnout but the
2/ point of #citizenpresence is to keep constant pressure and let the BP and ICE know people are paying attention. Monday I attempted to see the camp under the Paso Del Norte bridge that they claimed had been shut down. Unfortunately, I only got so far walking around so I didn’t
3/ see anything. At night we went to the candlelight vigil that occurs every Monday at the Clint Concentration camp. Contrary to how it’s framed on national news, this camp isn’t on the outskirts of El Paso. It’s 20 minutes from the lower valley in EP, which is where I grew up.

Beginning this week, #CitizenPresence travelers will observe, as members of the general public, at the El Paso immigration court.… 1/
A few basics about immigration courts. The are not like “regular” courts, that is they are not part of the judicial branch of the federal government. 2/
Because the judiciary has considered immigration hearings as matters of federal law enforcement, these hearings are held in courts run by the Executive Branch, under the umbrella of the DOJ. 3/

Why at 4:30a am I in a Lyft to BWI airport, fleeing the Baltimore humidity on #July4 for the greater heat of El Paso?

Full statement is attached. Basically, #CitizenPresence is the reason. Making sure moral outrages of the camps are before our consciousness. Follow my day here.
If they make a movie Davening [praying] in Airports I'll be in line. White privilege: no one looks at me. Today is #July4& also #RoshChodesh, the start of a new month.

I say Hallel, the collection of Psalms celebrating special days. "You freed my bonds." "I called from depths."
And a specially long psalm to end the prayers of the day, mentioning the blessing of food. "Bread satisfies people's hearts." Wine, oil and bread. The basics migrants look for. What our cruel government denies them in the camps.

New month, new possibilities for change, Exoduses.

Many people are wondering whether demonstrating or holding a vigil at the US border facility in Clint, TX makes sense if children so badly treatly there have been moved. I think yes. Here's a thread on why. 1/ #CitizenPresence
DHS will constantly shuffle the children, often to avoid scrutiny in particular locations. Most ordinary citizens not in position to know where kids are at particular moment or to get access to help them directly. Journalists, electeds, and specialized groups work on that. 2/
But gathering at Clint can make it THE place to demand that that location be closed, preserved, and contextualized - yes, like the Nazi camps have been - to indicate for posterity what the US govt is doing and has done. 3/

People are asking why there aren’t already marches and protests over the horrible detention centers in Texas. Thought I’d share a few thoughts about this. Thread. 1/
First, let’s recall that last June thousands of us did participate in marches and rallies to express opposition to #familyseparation and zero tolerance as tools of US immigration policy. 2/
Last year’s efforts motivated litigation and action by Dem Senators to try to achieve family reunification. Mitch McConnell is the reason that bills to address the problem have not been enacted. In other words, we need to flip the Senate blue in 2020. 3/
