Happening now: B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix, PHO Dr. Bonnie Henry and Northern Health CMO Dr. Jong Kim holding a press conference on COVID-19 in Northern B.C., where ICU cases are rising, fast. Background: cbc.ca/news/canada/br… #yxj #ydq #cityofPG
Dix: "The Northern Health is seeing a very significant [number] of cases." More than 100 new cases today, and positivity rate very high. "The vast majority of patients in Northern Health today are unvaccinated."
Dix: While some regions, such as Kitimat, have higher-than-average vaccination rates, the majority of Northern B.C. is far behind.

New measures are coming to slow transmission of COVID-19 in northern B.C.

I'm late to join, but Prince Geoge city council is going to decide whether to move forward with a "safer streets" bylaw tonight. It targets "nuisance behaviour" which includes loitering, setting up tents, littering etc. It's also very tied to the disscussion around tent cities
Here's some background. Among those opposed is the B.C. Assembly of First Nations, whose elected chief - Terry Teegee - is based in Prince George. cbc.ca/news/canada/br… #cityofPG

Seems to have been in back storage area. Very smoky. Cleanup mode now, but roads closed in all directions. ImageImage
Three alarm fire. Cleanup now. Very preliminary as to what, but early look is it is an external fire that started between these two trailers during that massive lightning storm. But again, this is super preliminary. Investigation underway. No reported injuries #cityofpg Image

For weeks, people in Prince George have been calling for the city to set up a permanent space for homeless campers.

Instead, the city starts serving eviction notices tomorrow. cbc.ca/news/canada/br…

Earlier this spring, a rally and march were held by people wanting a permanent homeless encampment somewhere away from the downtown. The city says there are enough shelter spaces that it is not needed. cbc.ca/news/canada/br…
There are a wide variety of reasons people don't want to use shelters including rules around sobriety (which is difficult when you are managing addiction) and a desire to stay with partners cbc.ca/news/canada/br…

Prince George city councillors are openly discussing legal options against staff members after it's been revealed budget increases to a downtown project were approved in secret #cityofpg
The cost overruns on this project are insane. It is now projected to be nearly triple the original price, from $12.4M to $34M. You can do a lot with $22M in a city of this size. #cityofpg

I'm watching Prince George's first city council meeting of 2021. Tonight's agenda is very much focused on downtown with reports from RCMP, the poverty reduction committee, the business improvement association and committee on safe and inclusive downtown #cityofPG
Among decisions expected to be made last night:

* Additional funding to downtown RCMP patrols
* The opening of a downtown safety office staffed by new bylaw officers
* Contracting of a company to clean up biohazards in camps and around shelters
* Increased housing #cityofPG

OK a lot of COVID-19 stuff has been happening today in Northern B.C. so here's my best attempt at gathering it into a single thread. #cityofPG #bcpoli
First the big news: a rapid-response team is in Fort St. James, two hours away from Prince George, as there is a major cluster of cases there. cbc.ca/news/canada/br…
This morning, BC Emergency Health Services said they'd been told 60 active cases in the community. I was told that number was accurate by a health care person in the community. But as of this afternoon, Northern Health says the active case count is approx. 40 active in Omineca

Hi @tiben12. Thanks for your thoughtful questions. Happy to answer them. A thread to answer your thread:

Question 1: First, targeted funding for students with special needs has gone up 30% under our government, Indigenous education funding has gone up 29%.

1/
Since forming government, student enrollment has increased by 3.4% alongside a budget increase in education of 19.4% . . . these increases directly impact students in rural and remote schools. Personally, I don’t consider these improvements “a few tweaks.”

2/
Contrast: the BC Liberals closed 267 schools from 2002 to 2017. @shirleybond was Education Minister during this time … she even labelled her work with her 2017 re-election sign on the property of one of the 13 schools her government closed in #cityofPG. (Exhibit A)
