🧵1/ This #IndependenceDay, let’s talk about how to keep our democracy. This is not hyperbolic—right *NOW* the GOP is enacting an *ongoing* coup 50+ years in the making. #53PickUp #VoteBlue
2/ Odds are you don’t have a strong understanding of US civics because our government didn’t *WANT* you to understand it. The GOP’s most reliable voting block are uneducated whites. They want it easier to dupe voters with diversions & propaganda. 🧵:
3/ It’s also easier to fool people into thinking the Democrats are purposely or incompetently messing things up if your audience doesn’t know how civics works. The GOP & enemy countries have massive & effective propaganda networks to turn public opinion. Image

I thought👇this tweet was very interesting and well worth a read. Couple points. The operative word here is FEEL. @waitbutwhy feels something similar to Musk which I don’t feel but I am interested in knowing about. Listening to how people feel is a key ingredient in emerging from
2/ this nasty, stupid and low era. Feeling is different than thinking . Some people think that Billionaires should pay 90% tax rates. Others think that is punitive and confiscatory. Both points of view have a basis for existing. Tolerance for different thinking is key in a free
3/ society. Thinking is different than knowing. I know Joe Biden won the election. There should be no space in the town square where feelings and opinion stand equally with fact. Feeling, opinion and knowing; three very different things. They are often confused and shouldn’t be.

Teachers/staff: We support you.

It must be hard to watch this interview.

A good lesson for kids in #medialiteracy #civics and campaign finance reform & ethics though. #sschat #apgov

With $500 mill spent on campaign, how much could have gone to vaccines & ventilation systems?
Bloomberg said virtual learning was a joke in this interview w/ MSNBC’s @SRuhle.

Educators @heymrsbond @withCourtney helped us at PBS produce this piece in which teachers across the country shared the excellent teaching that is taking place every day.

@Cleavon_MD @saribethrose @Prof_Katz joined teachers & staff across the country in this PBS Zoom to let them know that they’re not going crazy, their fears are justified and to support them at a time when teacher bashing is reaching new heights.

Dear #Corporations -

While we appreciate your well intentioned gesture to cut off the flow of money to #Seditionists who tried to thwart the will of the People by refusing to certify valid vote counts, it's not enough. 1/13
Because nothing stops you from funding their challengers in the next cycle. And that does nothing to stop the corruption of our body politic.

What we need is for you to #CloseYourCheckbook and get out of the politics business. 2/13
You cannot claim to value #democracy while you devalue its purpose to represent the people. And I hate to be the one to tell you this but in spite of what @MittRomney said, corporations are not people. I'll believe they are when Texas executes one. 3/13

THREAD - Independent thinking is a prerequisite for a healthy democracy. When sensationalism, tribalism and emotions replace accuracy, liberty and interests, democracy will be jeopardized. Over the past few days:
- Liberty-loving Republicans, who associate strong government with tyranny, have been calling for the deployment of combat troops to police Americans
- Government-loving Democrats, who shun individualism and the Second Amendment, have been calling for de-funding police, leaving Americans with the only alternative of arming themselves to the teeth.

(THREAD) @ImpactAlpha challenges #impact investors to scale up their efforts 10X. To which I say: Yes! #Investors can do more, but there’s also #policy and #civics to consider. I want to share some ways at @_BlueHaven we’re addressing the #pandemic.
1/ On the #investment side, we’re checking in with #entrepreneurs and orgs we support, helping them keep their teams intact, thinking through costs, etc. (Check out @LaurenSCochran’s conversation with @annefieldonline: bit.ly/2XSdX8D)
2/ Bridge loans to #impact companies can also help. We’re excited about our investment in the Open Road Alliance Fund (@openroadtweets), which offers these to orgs affected by #COVID19 all over the world. bit.ly/2yavbUt

How do we re-imagine our Educational Institutions?

History is important...#PostcardsFromALAIGBO

An old but very relevant piece by Obi Nwakanma

1/ "As a result of Azikiwe’s own ideas of the university, he pushed for the establishment of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka,.."
2/ "Zik passed the charter of the University through the Eastern Nigeria House in 1955. The University of Nigeria, Nsukka was established in 1955, but it opened its gates for the first 280 students on Oct 7, 1960, just one week on the attainment of Nigeria’s independence..."
3/ "Aside from Azikiwe, the next most important figure in the establishment of University of Nigeria was Dr. I.U. Akpabio, Minister for education in the government Azikiwe led in the East. Akpabio & Zik traveled around seeking funds across the world for the proper establishment."

This semester in my Arts of Islam survey, I decided to scrap the research paper and have students collaborate to re-write @Wikipedia articles. It ended up better than I could have imagined & transformed how I think about teaching #StudentsOfIslamicArt #IslamicArt #MedievalTwitter
I was hesitant about shaking up a popular class that had worked well for years, but one statistic finally convinced me: 90% of Wikipedia articles are written by men - and largely by men from Euro-American contexts. theguardian.com/education/2018…
The oft-maligned #Wikipedia is the now the world's most frequently-consulted source of information & fifth-most visited website. Because anyone can be an editor, it's on us to make it the best resource it can be. If you think Wikipedia is bad, look in the mirror. Wikipedia is us.
